Sometimes I think of all the poisonous teachings from my Catholic childhood I rejected, and then I remember the Works of Mercy. Whether or not there is a heaven for me to end up in, I believe that these are the instructions for a good, moral life. If we humans can have purpose, this is it.

The spiritual Works of Mercy demand forbearance, forgiveness, instruction, comfort.

In case you didn’t grow up Catholic, or if you didn’t pay attention in catechism, the physical Works of Mercy are as follows:
1) Feed the hungry
2) Give drink to the thirsty
3) Clothe the naked
4) Shelter the homeless
5) Visit the imprisoned
6) Care for the sick
7) Bury the dead
