Much could be more human/humane about the process, and I think I understand the many complex reasons why someone wouldn’t want to shout about receiving public funding. But you’re correct, not acknowledging it helps it get chipped away.

When I was in the granting world I found that writers were particularly adverse to this. Musicians, visual artists, etc, celebrated their grants. I’d go to group launches where we’d funded every participating author. They’d thank everyone except the councils.

An overview of a frozen waterfall.
A close view of strange ice formations on a frozen waterfall.

Last set of icy falls pics from Neebing for this month. I’ll miss the daily shifts and changes. For the balance of winter this account will be fish, birds, frozen lakes … and possibly book publishing?

A semi-abstract close up of ice and falling water on the face of a frozen waterfall.
A semi-abstract close up of ice and falling water on the face of a frozen waterfall. Two columns of ice look almost like figurines.

A cluster of tiny flowers, blue-green at the base, fading to a pale purple.
Over the last decade my father and I grew a few batches of odd plants from seed. This is probably Lachenalia orchioides, probably var glaucinia, from South Africa’s Table Mountain. I can’t find the Indigenous name online, and the anglo “wild hyacinth” doesn’t suit it.

This week’s ice, really. It’s gone from almost fully open to frozen over in ten days.

A frozen waterfall. Towers of lacy ice stand at the bottom.

Three towers of lacy frozen foam.
Detail of the top of two towers of frozen river foam.
Ice formed by freezing foam on the Pine River, Neebing, Ontario. Also, hello to all the followers I somehow accumulated while dawdling on giving this platform a proper go!

The best thing about #yow is the entirely sincere “bonjour-hi.” I find myself responding to it with “bonjour-hi,” which helps nobody.

Drab concrete walls meeting in a corner, with patches of reflected morning sunlight.
One day Ottawa will bless me with a room with a view. This is not that day.
