Poet Josie Balka on going from TikTok to the page Loves of Our Lives, Balka’s second book after her New York Times bestseller explores the types of love people experience throughout their lives

"Then, in 2023, she decided on a whim to write a poem instead.

'I wrote about how I had a month left until my twenties were over and I put it up online,' said Balka."

Is it Berube's system to not worry about the neutral zone? Hard forecheck on o-zone, tight 5-man unit in the d-zone, but the neutral zone, like last night for Tampa, is like the Red Sea...maybe you can only have 2 out of 3? (which ain't bad)

Isn’t 34-24 the kind of pace that you’d expect from a random playoff team anyway? It’s not so daunting when you think of it that way.

Reviews give my writing life, give my ambitions, some spine. I'll never be able to reconcile their absence. It's worrisome.

I can't shake the angst, even knowing how few review venues exist.

But the flip side--are younger poets of the same mindset? Are reviews nice to have, not need to have? It's possible that beginning a career when review culture is near-nonexistent has bred ambivalence to them.

A discussion we had at Coach House ed board--how to convey to our older authors that reviews, or number of, are no longer a way to gauge reception.

I'm a case in point: I'm "older." This is the 2nd review Lossless has received, and it's not looking good for another, 1 1/2 years past pub date. 😱

Lossless reviewed.

"The prose poems are standouts: Tierney crafts what seem to become miniature films within the tight and witty narrative space of his works." βœ’οΈ Caleb Edmondson, Mid-American Review, Bowling Green State U.

It also has a poetry book for sale (one only) by a local author who, in the acknowledgments, β€œβ€¦would like to thank readers of poetry in general and mine in particular.” A sentiment we can all get behind.

I have one Al Purdy anecdote that I may or may not share. If I don't, it'll be my great silent ballad.
