A friend of mine worked with rhinos a while back and that was how I found out that the popular depictions of hippos and rhinos are backwards. Rhinos are big dumpy, nearsighted goofballs and hippos are furious nightmares fueled by rage and murder.

(pt 2) though seriously, throughout its heyday there was a steadily growing discussion of how the genre really glorifies Victorian Endland and inadvertently white-washes over the atrocities of the British Empire. It didnt kill steampunk, but it did definitely put a damper on things...

Hiya @probsnotaliens.bsky.social, I can (partially) answer your steampunk question! Wild Wild West isn't to blame, since it released before steam punk really got big (1999, while steam punk took off late aughts, early tens). One of the big culprits is that most ancient of foes. Wokeness! (pt 1)
