Primate is a freaky, brutal, wild new horror movie from genre filmmaker Johannes Roberts. After premiering at this year's Fantastic Fest & Beyond Fest, it's next playing at the 2025 Sitges Film Festival and other fests around the world before it crashes in theaters in January next year. Roberts is already a horror cinema veteran - he also directed the two 47 Meters Down shark movies, along with Forest of the Damned, Storage 24, The Other Side of the Door, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Primate is something new - even though it seems like a familiar concept, about a usually calm, cuddly pet turning into an evil killing machine, we've never seen a horror movie just like this before. Which is an exciting experience. A chimpanzee living with a family inside their gorgeous, huge home located on a cliff in Hawaii contracts rabies and goes mad, stalking and murdering the people who are there. Sitges 2025: Kenji Tanigaki's 'The Furious' Has the Best Action of 2025 Holy hell – Wang Wei is coming and nothing will stop him! Let me just say it right up front: The Furious is the best action movie of 2025, hands down. Nothing is going to top this. While there are plenty of other great action movies this year, none of them have the fight scenes that this movie does, none of them are this level of full-on, go-totally-wild awesome. Made by Japanese action filmmaker Kenji Tanigaki, The Furious premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival in their prestigious Midnight Madness section, then played at Busan, Beyond Fest, and now at the Sitges Film Festival – which is where I caught up with it. And OMFG it totally rocks. This movie is The Raid 2 of the 2020s. Another instant action classic. There's no question about it, this movie is up there with those two Indonesian action classics (both made by Gareth Evans). Two dudes take on an ENTIRE child trafficking empire on their own!! The Everything Everywhere All at Once stunts / fight team delivers the BEST sprawling, mind-blowing fight scenes since The Raid 2 in 2014. Yes, really, nothing has been this incredible since then. It's a meta riff on superhero movies, with a director trying to reinvent them and remake Wonder Man, and he'll end up casting Yahya in the lead, but this trailer doesn't get that far yet. At this weekend's New York Comic-Con, Paramount+ unveiled the first official trailer for their next new Star Trek series - this one is titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. It'll be ready for streaming starting in January 2026 in just a few months from now if anyone wants to tune in. Set in the 32nd century, the far-future time period that was introduced in the series Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024), the series follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they come of age and also train to be officers. Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, & Bella Shepard star as Starfleet Academy cadets, with Holly Hunter as captain & chancellor of Starfleet Academy, Zoë Steiner, Robert Picardo, Tig Notaro, and Oded Fehr. GKids has unveiled the official US trailer for an acclaimed Japanese film titled Kokuho, made by filmmaker Sang-il Lee. The title Kokuho means "national treasure" and is inspired by a true story. The sci-fi drama series is titled Pluribus - the Latin word is an adjective that means "much, many" (commonly used in the U.S. slogan "E pluribus unum"). The only one-line intro available so far to setup the concept: The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. Pluribus stars Rhea Seehorn (who was also in "Better Call Saul") along with Carlos Manuel Vesga, Karolina Wydra, Miriam Shor, and Samba Schutte. Focus Features has revealed the full offiical trailer for the film Hamnet, one of the most acclaimed films of the year so far. Hamnet is the latest feature directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, following her work on Marvel's Eternals, this is her getting back to making something more meaningful and intimate. Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet. Jessie Buckley stars as Agnes Shakespeare, Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare set in the 16th century. It's telling the story of Agnes - the wife of William Shakespeare - as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her only son, Hamnet. A human and heart-stopping story as the backdrop to the creation of Shakespeare's most famous play, Hamlet. TIFF describes it as a look at how The Bard was not a cold genius, he was "a real man whose literary prowess was irrevocably impacted by his domestic life." The full cast includes Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Jack Shalloo, David Wilmot. With a wonderful score by Max Richter. Paramount+ has debuted a quick 2-minute making of featurette for the new horror creation called Vicious, the latest from filmmaker Bryan Bertino, creator of The Strangers franchise and director of a few other indie horror films as well. Vicious recently premiered at Fantastic Fest 2025 and will be streaming on Paramount+ to watch soon in October - starting tomorrow if anyone is ready to dive in. A woman spends the night fighting for her own existence as she slips down a rabbit hole contained inside a gift from a late-night visitor – some kind of mysteriously evil box. It comes with simple instructions if she wants to live – place three things inside: something you need, something you hate, and something you love. Starring Dakota Fanning as Polly and a creepy Kathryn Hunter, along with Mary McCormack, Rachel Blanchard, Devyn Nekoda, Klea Scott, and Emily Mitchell. Mubi has debuted their official trailer for the film titled Father Mother Sister Brother, the new Jim Jarmusch film that has been in the works for years. It premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, where it strangely won the Golden Lion award, and also played at NYFF. It will play in limited theaters starting in December later this year. A new ensemble comedy feature a huge cast of characters - this is a triptych with segments set in the US, France, Ireland. Estranged siblings reunite after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents - a mom, dad, & brother / sister. A series of character studies: quiet, observational and non-judgemental — a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy. Starring Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, Françoise Lebrun. Despite this solid cast, this is one of my least favorite films of the year. Excruciatingly boring and entirely pointless - don't think it deserves any awards or anyone's attention. First Look Teaser for 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2' "Tortoise power! Here comes the radical reptiles." Paramount has revealed a funny first look teaser for the animation one-off short film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2. Going back back to the way things used to be, they're playing this new animated short in front of the upcoming theatrical release of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants this December. While we wait for the next TMNT: Mutant Mayhem sequel (scheduled for 2027), this short looks like a treat for Turtles fans. When a mysterious toy company exploits the Turtles' newfound fame with ripoff toys, the brothers follow the clues to New Jersey where they stumble upon a shocking discovery. It's going to be a delightful riff on the classic Home Alone movies, specifically Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (made in 1992). The full title is an obvious reference: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 - Lost in New Jersey. I'm glad they're already ready to drop this - keep the Turtles up on the big screen where they belong in another fun little X-Mas story. This one is actually called Radu Jude's Dracula, the official title because it's directed by Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude. Looks totally bonkers! He's the original intro from the Locarno Film Festival: "A Dracula film made in Transylvania. What does it contain? A vampire hunt. Zombies & Dracula crashing a strike. A sci-fi story about Vlad the Impaler coming back. An adaptation of the first Romanian vampire novella. A love story. A montage film reusing a classic vampire film. A vulgar folktale. AI-generated kitsch stories. And many delights in a film dealing with this cinema myth." The film is a riff on Artificial intelligence including scenes created with AI because it's acting as commentary on how stupid AI is, not indulging in it. Sony Pictures Classics has finally revealed the full official trailer for Nuremberg, written and directed by screenwriter James Vanderbilt, the second feature he has directed. Based on the book titled "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist" by Jack El-Hai, it's set at the famous Nuremberg Trials from 1945-1946 in Germany after WWII ended. This recently premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival and opens in theaters this November – we've already posted two other teasers before. A psychiatrist evaluates Nazi leaders before the trials begin, growing increasingly obsessed with understanding evil as he forms a disturbing bond with Hermann Göring. It's a full recreation of the iconic Nuremberg trials, where they exposed the real evil within the Nazi mindset and what they did. With Russell Crowe as Hermann Göring, Rami Malek as Douglas Kelley, Michael Shannon as Robert H. Jackson, Leo Woodall, Richard E. Grant, John Slattery, Mark O'Brien, Colin Hanks, Lydia Peckham, and Wrenn Schmidt. Quite chilling. Neon has reveled the main official US trailer for the terrific dark comedy titled No Other Choice from masterful Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, his latest entertaining extra dark creation since making Decision to Leave back in 2022 (one of my faves). No Other Choice is the title of his new one, which is based on the 1997 novel called "The Ax" written by Donald Westlake. Fully reinvented into a Korean fable of a man who loses his job and doesn't know what to do. A fresh murderous tale from one of the great Korean masters of dark & depraved thrills! Here's the intro to this sneaky setup: After being laid off and unemployed for several years, a man devises a unique plan to finally secure a new job: eliminate his competition. This stars Lee Byung-hun as Man-soo, with Son Ye-jin, Yeom Hye-ran, Park Hee-soon, Yoo Yeon-seok, and Cha Seung-won. This premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and it also played at TIFF & NYFF, earning rave reviews from some critics, although I'm a bit more mixed on this one. Must Watch Stunning Trailer for 'Train Dreams' Starring Joel Edgerton "Do you think bad things that we do follow us through life?" Netflix has revealed the stunning main official trailer for one of the best films of the year - Train Dreams, by filmmaker Clint Bentley (writer / producer on Sing Sing, director of Jockey before this). Train Dreams premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to great reviews (here's mine). Netflix is properly giving this a theatrical release - playing in theaters exclusively in November for two weeks before it arrives for streaming. The breathtakingly beautiful film is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century. It follows him throughout a great deal of his life, through trials and tribulations, as he watches the world change right before his eyes. It's an incredible film. With a score composed by Bryce Dessner. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert, Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, with Kerry Condon and William H.
