Blurry image of coyote in motion running as it is excited/agitated from chasing a small rodent like mammal
Coyote angrily slams paw of the ground trying to catch a small rodent like mammal and it screams at the ground in frustration

π§ͺπ¦ Just the usual shenanigans at 4AM in the middle of a provincial park.
It's difficult to see but there's a small mammal (we think a vole?) being chased/played with by the coyote (Canis latrans).

Image of a marmot on a mountain looking out into the valley in mount Robson provincial park
π§ͺπ Happy Earth Day from WildCo! Very much feeling the Marmot in the camera trap image below as it stares in awe at the beauty of the landscape (and of the ever retreating glaciers in the face of anthropogenic climate change).

Initial Effects of Clearcutting and Partial Retention Forest Harvesting Methods on Some Small Mammals in Northern British Columbia
| Journal of Ecosystems and Management
πΏοΈ Size does matter, and small mammals may be getting left behind due to clearcut logging in BC.
Constantinou et al compare five harvesting treatments to see how small mammal diversity varies along this spectrum, and if partial harvests are a viable middle ground. The answer β yes*

1st post, 1st paper of 2025! https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0307730. Led by MSc Katie Tjaden-McClement with Angela Brennan & Robin Naidoo, we asked whether conservat...
π Are conservation prioritization schemes effective in translating their recommendations into reality?
A new paper in @plos.org by Tjaden-McClement et al looks to see if schemes like Biodiversity Hotspots are working, or if human pressure is coming in the way of new protections.
