On this day every year, alongside the mourning, I also remember the unity, strength, and heroism of ordinary Americans on September 11, 2001. I was working just blocks from the White House that morning as the nation watched the events unfold with disbelief and terror.

“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being…” Justice Jackson’s life is a shining example of how to not let that distraction keep you from your goals.

Last night, I had a moment to thank US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson for the inspiring example she sets for all of us who care about justice.
She told an illuminating story of how she learned while at Harvard Law School that, in the words of Toni Morrison, 🧵

This Labor Day, I am thinking about the generations of working people who organized, stood together, & fought for better conditions, not just for themselves, but for all of us. They demanded respect for their essential human dignity & recognition of their contribution to our economy.

In NC, it was 1971 before we officially ratified the amendment and, while our voter turnout has continued to rise, our representation as women has decreased in the legislature. Today, I’m remembering the words of Ida B. Wells: “the way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, prohibiting individual states from denying women the right to vote. We must never forget that the fight for suffrage was indeed a battle and one that widely left Black, Brown, and Indigenous women behind.

On this day in 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a child of immigrants, was sworn in as the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. She was already well known in that courtroom, having previously argued six cases before the court. 🧵

And yet, on its 60th Anniversary, we see the validity of the core protections of the VRA being challenged (again) as unconstitutional AND Texas lawmakers (again) fleeing their state to protect their constituents right to vote.

The VRA was slow to be enforced but ultimately broke down barriers to voter participation by previously disenfranchised Black voters.

On this day 60 years ago, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, enforcing the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution and seeking to prevent racial discrimination in voting.🧵
