"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Tip for those in the US still waiting for a shipment notification. Check for an email from "transglobalexpress" (which might be in your spam folder). I almost marked mine as spam, but luckily I noticed the Dunmanifestin name in the email body.

An infographic titled "How BIG are the BLACK HOLES we find with GRAVITATIONAL WAVES?" by @astronerdika. The graphic displays a range of black hole masses detected via gravitational waves, categorized by their size in solar masses (mass of the Sun) and represented with playful cat-like black hole illustrations.

The categories from left to right are:

1. "<5 times the mass of the Sun"
- Labeled "smol"
- Very small black hole illustration represented by a curled up black cat
- Arrow pointing left: "THIS WAY TO NEUTRON STARS"
- Example: "Big component of GW230529 (~3.6 times the mass of the Sun)"

2. "~10 times the mass of the Sun"
- Labeled "basic"
- Slightly larger black hole cat illustration
- Caption: "LOTS OF BLACK HOLES"

3. "~35–45 times the mass of the Sun"
- Labeled "hefty"
- Bigger black hole cat illustration
- Continues the idea of a populated range

4. ">60 times the mass of the Sun"
- Labeled "chonky"
- Large black hole cat illustration
- Caption: "FORBIDDEN TERRITORY? (can these even be made from the collapse of star cores?!)"
- Example: "Components of GW190521 (~85 + ~66 times the mass of the Sun)"

5. ">100 times the mass of the Sun"
- Labeled "oh lawd"
- Very large, curled-up black hole cat illustration
- Arrow pointing right: "THIS WAY TO INTERMEDIATE MASS BLACK HOLES"
- Example: "Components of GW231123 (~137 + ~103 times the mass of the Sun)"

Below the categories is a stylized black curve representing the inferred population of black holes detected by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA. It rises sharply in the "basic" range and falls off toward the "hefty" and "chonky" ranges, with a note reading:
"this curve is an artistic representation of the black hole population inferred by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA."

This infographic draws from the β€œChonky Cat” meme.

Heard the latest news from the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration? We detected the collision of the most massive pair of black holes so far: #GW231123 weighing in at ~137 + ~103 times the mass of the Sun!

So to celebrate, here’s a handy chart ✨

Just how chonky are these black holes? πŸ€”

Ever since recorded music attained fidelity on-par with live performances, it could be argued that nobody "needs" to learn to play an instrument.

But luckily we decided the world is a better place when we teach each other how to play instruments so we still do it.

I feel the same about writing.

Another great gone. Goodbye Peter. You were a true friend. One of the first writers in comics to truly support my art. Much love to you and your family. Hope to see you on the other side.

Oh no! He was one of the first authors who I sought out regularly and super gregarious when I met him at a signing. He told stories and fielded questions from entranced fans (as he kept the line moving for those just there for the autograph), and I stood there for an hour of joy. He will be missed.

humans are not designed for the amount of feedback being a public figure on social media provides. Whether it's praise or criticism, receiving an avalanche of nonstop attention is profoundly corrosive to your brain.

While many critics of AI might hope that familiarity with the tools – with their frequent hallucinations and often outdated knowledge bases – would breed contempt, the opposite appears to be the case. Those Britons who use AI chatbots more frequently are the most likely to think they are good at pretty much all of the tasks listed.

This Yougov survey contains an important finding: people who rely heavily on ChatGPT rate it as being "good" at tasks that we ABSOLUTELY know for sure it is very bad at

imo, this is a strong piece of evidence these heavy users simply do not ever check outputs

chatgpt has fully broken-through to every facet of the corporate environment. I'm spending a not-insignificant amount of my time every week now explaining to people that just because chatgpt told you that something was possible doesn't mean that it a) is or b) even exists

I love that convention. Every time I've gone there have been a bunch of creators I already love and many new favorites to discover. I even bought a poster from Tomm Moore one year and he spent like twenty minutes chatting with my friend and I about his upcoming film.
