I’d have to do some heavier digging to answer that convincingly. Given that music was part of the Quadrivium and the higher doctorate has been around since the mid-fifteenth century, I would think the subject was considered ‘worthy’. I’m not sure how the MusD gown developed its distinct style.

Ah, I have a spreadsheet to help with post-1977 queries! A quick eye over the records I have easily to hand (late nineteenth century to present) would suggest that recipients of the MusD in any form are pretty rare.

Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Saint-Saëns and Arrigo Boïto in 1893! In more recent times, Harrison Birtwistle and Evelyn Glennie in 2010 and Ninette de Valois and Charles Rosen in 1992. Plenty of years without a single one, though 🎓

Sad to hear the news that Dame Cleo Laine has died, aged 97. Here she is with John Dankworth, before the Honorary Degree ceremony in Cambridge in 1994. 🎓

It’s had a temporary elevation on Honorary Degree day in recent years, as the gateway to the reception after the ceremony, so various dignitaries have processed through! 🎓

I love a good corvid evensong. One of the best I heard was at Binham Priory, although you can get a pretty good one on Grantchester Meadows at certain times of year.

Or even not-so-modern culture. On one of my first outings with the ceremonial team in 2003, we were processing informally in academical dress from DAR to the Senate House. On Silver Street, a passer-by declaimed ‘Looks just like Harry Potter!’ as if that was what prompted our attire … 🎓

Presumably accompanied by ‘Don’t come here - it’s awful’ postcards? 😹
