26.07.2025 17:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβd have to do some heavier digging to answer that convincingly. Given that music was part of the Quadrivium and the higher doctorate has been around since the mid-fifteenth century, I would think the subject was considered βworthyβ. Iβm not sure how the MusD gown developed its distinct style.
26.07.2025 12:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ah, I have a spreadsheet to help with post-1977 queries! A quick eye over the records I have easily to hand (late nineteenth century to present) would suggest that recipients of the MusD in any form are pretty rare.
26.07.2025 11:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Saint-SaΓ«ns and Arrigo BoΓ―to in 1893! In more recent times, Harrison Birtwistle and Evelyn Glennie in 2010 and Ninette de Valois and Charles Rosen in 1992. Plenty of years without a single one, though π
25.07.2025 16:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Photograph of four people in academical dress walking in front of a large stone building. Two are dressed in black gowns and are carrying silver maces. The other two (Dame Cleo Laine and John Dankworth) are dressed in colourful gowns of cream damask silk with cherry-coloured silk at the end of the sleeves and on the facings. Two men in black gowns are seen in the background, standing on the steps of the building, watching the group as they walk by.
Sad to hear the news that Dame Cleo Laine has died, aged 97. Here she is with John Dankworth, before the Honorary Degree ceremony in Cambridge in 1994. π
25.07.2025 16:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Itβs had a temporary elevation on Honorary Degree day in recent years, as the gateway to the reception after the ceremony, so various dignitaries have processed through! π
