The Suleiman Bridge (Croatian: Most Sulejmana I.) was the longest wooden bridge in the world, spanning the Drava River in Osijek, Slavonia, eastern Croatia. It played a crucial role during the Ottoman–Habsburg wars until it was finally burned down in 1686. Commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent, the bridge was constructed in 1566 to facilitate the Ottoman army’s march toward Vienna, providing a crossing over the vast wetlands. At 6 meters (20 feet) wide and 8 km (5 miles) long, it was considered the eighth wonder of the world at the time. The bridge was composed of two sections: a floating part over the Drava River, made of connected boats, and a wooden plank-covered structure supported by piles over the marshlands. Built primarily to enable the Ottoman Army’s advance toward Szeged, it was partially destroyed and reconstructed multiple times before being completely burned down by the Austrian army in 1686. It was never rebuilt.
