I wish they'd drawn a tighter line between how those men ended up working in such dangerous conditions - the limited economic choices in small towns, the poverty, and the monopoly particular industries have in a region. It was a bleak portrait of these realities without drawing attention to them.

Some of the enthusiasm for the Ardern's govt reminded me of the hope we used to have, and the credit sequence showing how they did act reminded me of the political power squandered - while it was positive for the Pike River cause, it tastes a bit bitter now.

I got to see a pre-release screening of Pike River last night.

The film does a great job of showing how spineless the mine management and John Key's govt was, and the local misogyny faced by Anna and Sonya.
