My bangs were trapped under the thick fabric and there was something claustrophobic about it pressing so firmly on my face. I was used to my soft and stretchy blindfolds. They provided just enough pressure to keep my eyes closed and only had a rigid piece of plastic at the nose to keep the fabric tight to my cheeks. I yanked out more than a few hairs in an effort to free them from under the mask. “Would you hold still?” said Wes, pinning something to my chest. Rather than barking a retort at him, I pulled the heavy collar of the cassock robe to my face and inhaled. The fresh, clean smell of Dad’s soap was mixed with the spice of ceremonial incense. It was so strong I could almost taste it. For a moment, it was almost like he was there again. Like he’d never disappeared. How long would that scent linger? How long until even that faint trace of him would be gone?
