Fantastic new paper from @nabmed.bsky.social on 'INFRASTRUCTURE AS TERRITORIAL STIGMA: Labour Migrant Exclusions in the Indian City'

In what ways does infrastructure fuel, but also substantially reshape, forms of territorial stigmatization?

Read this to find out! πŸ‘‡

Repositioning energy geographies in a time of crisis: Arguments from a subdiscipline on the margins of geography - Thomas Ptak, Ryan Stock, Siddharth Sareen, Ankit Kumar, 2025 While a range of rapidly proliferating crises shaped by anthropogenic climate change is profound and generating a raft of spatially-centred energy research, ene...

Important paper that offers an evaluation and critique regarding the current state of energy geographies before outlining a few pathways that the authors think can help "move the needle" and advance the subdiscipline. How do you think we can move the subdiscipline forward?

@sheffielduni.bsky.social #Geography and #planning I teach on a module called Environmental Justice at a time of crisis. Today we designed student cafe spaces with #lego. There were circular economies, sharing spaces, accessibility and transport links, and an energy producing dance floor with a DJ.

This was such a fun activity. Great to hear laughter and talk as the students designed their spaces. It can be heavy and grim talking about justice and crisis. @ankitkumar.bsky.social also teaches on this module.

You are right. It might not be the whole picture. Still, institutions want to make moral claims on these sorts of things but not change institutional spaces and practices

04.10.2023 17:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

This is a huge showdown! I am all for flying less but highly entrenched institutional practices of time, energy & money need to change. Ideally, this scientist doesn't even need to travel. Also, let's not forget, common but differential responsibilities

04.10.2023 15:29 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, agree with this. As a social scientist working on climate change and society, it can be frustrating to see so little understanding of the role social science can play here. Not all scientists are the same and no one scientist is an expert on everything.

My research group H2POLITICS just published a piece on green extractivism vis-Γ -vis South Africa's race for green hydrogen. Based on interviews & activist research the article highlights alternative transition pathways in line with energy justice.

this is indeed a key problem with climate change work. The privilege given to 'science' for all questions related to society. I imagine journalists look for 'objective' & 'credible' voices, & social scientists do not fit the bill?

Institutions and senior academics need to work on these policies since too many junior folks are wasting time and money on APC costs for open-access publishing with predatory publishers. I delete all emails from MDPI now, never review or read them either.

02.10.2023 17:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Absolutely! It's absurd how institutions are turning a blind eye. I was told by someone that a few folk are asking questions in promotion panels about senior folk who have too many MDPI. Not in the UK though
