Design & Dignity: The Boosbeck Industries Furniture Scheme 1933-1937, opens Friday. In the 1930s, East Cleveland's mining villages faced unemployment. James and Ruth Pennyman, with Bauhaus-trained artist Wilfred Franks, started Boosbeck Industries to train jobless miners in furniture-making.

Back in the day, ironstone miners sometimes kept gunpowder at home β even under the bed! It wasnβt unusual to see damp barrels drying by the fire, or powder stashed in tins and bags. Not exactly your average Victorian cottageβ¦ talk about an explosive household!
