Helmsley Castle by Samuel Bough (1822โ1878). He was born in Carlisle to a poor family, but one who encouraged his interest in art. He is best known as a painter of maritime scenes. The castle offers a comprehensive chronicle of construction spanning from the 12th to the 16th centuries.

29.01.2026 22:41 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This image shows the inside of a traditional rhubarb forcing shed, a practice primarily found in the "Rhubarb Triangle" of West Yorkshire, England. Rhubarb plants are moved into dark, warm sheds after a couple of years in the field to encourage rapid growth. The absence of light results in tender, sweeter, pink stems and yellow leaves. Candles are traditionally used for harvesting as the low light prevents photosynthesis. The process is so fast that some say you can hear the rhubarb "sing" or "pop" as it grows. "Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb" has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.
Itโs that time of year again, and in Wakefield that means celebrating the areaโs most distinctive tradition: the forced rhubarb grown in the historic Rhubarb Triangle. Harvested by candlelight in darkened sheds, this delicate pink crop was so prized that special night trains ran from Christmas
