Dumb thing to complain about i know, when i just need to stay consistent and work at it. Just needed to vent

Seeing I've only read 30 or 40 pages of a history textbook without doing notes, annotations, or highlighting is just a little disheartening. Just a lot of atrophy to build past if i want to get to the minimum of 100 pages an hour with notes (which i never managed before anyway)

Something I've noticed trying to read more/seriously again after letting that skill lapse, is that I'm constantly a little annoyed at how slow I am now. Especially since i want to get better at it then i was when i was reading all the time

And talking with a way more knowledgeable friend afterwards got me another recommended book by the author about the period and subject to add to the couple I already had. Not sure when I'll get to them though. I want to go back to Japan Emerging and then read some other books first

Thankfully i'm fairly limited in my knowledge of that, so learning a little surface level stuff to reinforce what i got from Premodern Japan: A Historical Survey was nice

Finished The First Samurai: The Life and Legend of the Warrior Rebel, Taira Masakado yesterday. I liked it. It definitely functions more as a window into the emerging role of the people becoming the samurai in Heian era Japan than as a simple biography though
