A welcome chance to have studying time in one of my favourite libraries today. Buzz of Edinburgh festival just outside, ordered loveliness of books inside. What are some of your favourite go-to spaces? #NewCollege #UniversityofEdinburgh

An image of a poster for an onlinevents seminar is shown. The title is on the left, in white writing on a blue background, which reads 'Common Humanity & Community Solidarity: Freedom & Caring Research Insights.' There is a yellow banner at the bottom left that says 'Fri, 25 Jul 2025, 17.00-18.00 BST. In the middle, there is the Therapy and Social Change logo, which is a circle of interlinking hands of many skin colours. On the right is a photo of the seminar speaker. She has blonde shoulder length hair and pale skin, and she is wearing glasses and smiling. The collar of her green sweater can be seen in the photo too. Insightful question, I wonder if it depends on context? One nurse might describe what they do as a calling, while another might not ever use that term--so it might overstep a line to tell someone their job is a calling, if that's not how they experience it, & vice-versa?

This image is the text of the poem 'The Word', by Tony Hoagland.

Down near the bottom
of the crossed-out list
of things you have to do today,

between β€œgreen thread”
and β€œbroccoli” you find
that you have penciled β€œsunlight.”

Resting on the page, the word
is as beautiful, it touches you
as if you had a friend

and sunlight were a present
he had sent you from some place distant
as this morningβ€”to cheer you up,

and to remind you that,
among your duties, pleasure
is a thing,

that also needs accomplishing
Do you remember?
that time and light are kinds

of love, and love
is no less practical
than a coffee grinder

or a safe spare tire?
Tomorrow you may be utterly
without a clue

but today you get a telegram,
from the heart in exile
proclaiming that the kingdom

still exists,
the king and queen alive,
still speaking to their children,

β€”to any one among them
who can find the time,
to sit out in the sun and listen.

This image is of the front cover of the book 'The Emergency Poet: An Anti-Stress Poetry Anthology', edited by Deborah Alma. The cover is a drawing, with two purple clouds at the top, and a white circle in the middle of the cover that contains the title of the book. At the bottom of the cover is a blue road surrounded by blue and purple curly waves, leading the eye to the horizon that intersects with the white circle in the middle.

Such a life-giving anthology (thank you, Deborah Alma)
I especially love this poem, 'The Word,' by Tony Hoagland, which re-connects me with myself. What are your own ways of connecting with what is life-giving and full of meaning for you?
