Insightful question, I wonder if it depends on context? One nurse might describe what they do as a calling, while another might not ever use that term--so it might overstep a line to tell someone their job is a calling, if that's not how they experience it, & vice-versa?

This image is the text of the poem 'The Word', by Tony Hoagland.
Down near the bottom
of the crossed-out list
of things you have to do today,
between βgreen threadβ
and βbroccoliβ you find
that you have penciled βsunlight.β
Resting on the page, the word
is as beautiful, it touches you
as if you had a friend
and sunlight were a present
he had sent you from some place distant
as this morningβto cheer you up,
and to remind you that,
among your duties, pleasure
is a thing,
that also needs accomplishing
Do you remember?
that time and light are kinds
of love, and love
is no less practical
than a coffee grinder
or a safe spare tire?
Tomorrow you may be utterly
without a clue
but today you get a telegram,
from the heart in exile
proclaiming that the kingdom
still exists,
the king and queen alive,
still speaking to their children,
βto any one among them
who can find the time,
to sit out in the sun and listen.
This image is of the front cover of the book 'The Emergency Poet: An Anti-Stress Poetry Anthology', edited by Deborah Alma. The cover is a drawing, with two purple clouds at the top, and a white circle in the middle of the cover that contains the title of the book. At the bottom of the cover is a blue road surrounded by blue and purple curly waves, leading the eye to the horizon that intersects with the white circle in the middle.
Such a life-giving anthology (thank you, Deborah Alma)
I especially love this poem, 'The Word,' by Tony Hoagland, which re-connects me with myself. What are your own ways of connecting with what is life-giving and full of meaning for you?
