Revontulet loimusivat tänäänkin hetki sitten täällä Keski-Suomessa. Kaikin puolin otollinen sää yötaivaan tutkimiselle.

Lyhyt ja kuuma kesä. Itä-Lapissa kesä alkoi paikoin vasta 10.7., ja päättyi mahdollisesti jo heti elokuun puolivälin jälkeen. Ja tähän väliin mahtui vielä ennätyksellinen helleputki. Ei taida kauhean usein jäädä kesä näin lyhyeksi?

Have there been other (perhaps even longer?) heatwaves where the streak was just cut for a few days in-between? Other comparably widespread/prolonged heatwaves that just don't appear in this statistic? In its simplicity this statistic sure attracts large audiences, but it doesn't actually tell much.

Melko poikkeuksellista lienee sekin, että monin paikoin vuoden korkein lämpötila on edelleen huhtikuun puolivälistä. Esim. tuo Rauman 22,9° huhtikuun 16. päivä on siellä edelleen vuoden korkein lukema, kahden asteen erolla. Erikoista!

According to the Meteorological center of Latvia, the previous record for mid-April was 25,1°C from 1999 and 2000. The previous record for the entire month, 27,9°, was recorded on the 24th in 2000.

Meanwhile southern Estonia has reached already an unbelievable 28,5 degrees.

It's surprisingly cloudy right now. Can scattered clouds that allow the sun to shine through them contribute to warmer temperatures locally by essentially trapping the heat? Or is the effect negligible?

I ran a script on the open data to look for the highest march tmins, but the values on open data are daily minimums, not night minimums (contrary to this record), am I right? Regardless, it looks like a daily tmin of 4,9°C has been recorded already in February, in 1998.

Haha, agreed! I have a "tradition" to go for the first run in summer sportswear when 10°C is reached. It was indeed very refreshing.

Bay of Bothnia hasn't gotten full ice cover on three occasions; 1930, 2015 and 2020.
