W.M. Fluid Art

Araniek is a fluid art abstract painting that looks like a complicated snake. It's executed in yellows, reds, and oranges and intentionally subverts the line between realism and abstraction. There are cell-like structural elements which maintain the continuity of the composition while also challenging and perhaps negating it. I like negative space, becaue that's most of the visual story, in the way that what is written down is only a minor part of what your imagination conjures up when reading. Araniek is a generalised antagonist, and perhaps that's why I rendered it in powerful colours. It's also a question, though: what is it that paints: me or the forces I cannot control?

Multiple sensible people, from relatives to strangers, have told me that I need to write about my art: the why, the how, the what. I know they're right, so I'll try. But is it true that if painters could write down what we meant (easier, cheaper) we'd still paint instead?

Ahira is an abstract fluid art painting in reds, oranges and black against a stark white background. The figure evokes a masked warrior woman legendary in desert myths. Ahira is the second of the Sahel series. Red and orange bubble-like cells permeate the composition, imparting depth and complexity.

Abenauthyn is a fluid art painting in reds and oranges. Depicts an abstract figure that looks like a mythological form of some kind, possibly with a horn of some kind. The negative space or background is stark white, and little cells of alternating colours are present throughout the composition.

'Carried Away' is a fluid acrylic pour painting in blues, greens and hints of pink. It depicts an abstract bird of prey in flight. The bird seems to have something clutched in its claws. The bird's wings are outstretched and seem to be in motion. The composition is set off by a stark white background that forms the negative space. A light shadow at the edge of the composition lends depth and complexity. I used a white 'cell activator' to achieve the thin white lacing overlay over the design colours. Carried away is the third and final installment of the Sea and Sky series in this palette.

Water Dance is a fluid acrylics pour painting in blues, greens, and pink against a stark white background. The painting is on canvas. It depicts 3 abstract shapes flowing together in a loose semi-circle as if they're playfully leaping out of the water. The painting is minimalist. There is much more negative space than composition space on the canvas. The colours evoke both water, or waves, and possibly the sky when there's a gentle sun. Water Dance is part of a series of three titled 'Sea and Sky.'

I usually have a plan, but most plans don't survive contact with the paint.😅The most planned part is the palette and the consistency of the paints, where I try to make them able/likely to do the thing I want. After that it's usually a negotiation between my plan and how the paint moves in real time.

'Evolution (2) is a fluid art acrylic pour painting in greens, orange/copper and black accents as the swipe colour. Created by a palette knife swipe, there's lots of negative white space around the composition, giving it both definition and lightness. I was playing with a diptych that supposes an imaginary connection between mythological dragons and present day birds, although both are rendered in very abstract and gestural forms. This one is the dragon one. The first one, 'Evolution 1' (sorry, forgot to describe that one: please forgive) was the bird one. The unifying factor is the rather simple palette and the flowing movement that suggests aerial or avian flight: a sort of soaring/flying vibe.

I wanted to evoke a fanciful/speculative connection between mythological #dragons and present day #birds. Maybe they're kindred by ancestry or at least human imagination?
