It looks like this lets people assist in immigration cases if working with a Recognized Organization.

Is this a viable way for people with the time and resources to help?

Do you have advice for anyone interested in becoming accredited?

Is there any risk of the current DOJ changing the program?

Some thoughts:

1. The deadline for nominating a person or group for the Nobel Peace Prize is Feb. 1.

2. History professors are qualified nominators.

3. The people of Minnesota have been awe-inspiringly peaceful in the face of state violence.

4. He would be so mad.

This post has nothing to do with being pro or anti AI.

It’s about a concerning trend in which people with institutional authority are constructing gatekeeping standards around β€œnormal” "human" behavior.

How the hell are you supposed to have a career in tech in 2026? - Anil Dash A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

The number one thing I've been hearing from people in tech lately is, basically, "How the hell am I supposed to work in this industry anymore?" Though most folks are kind of afraid to say it out loud. So I wrote about how to think about it: www.anildash.com/2026/01/05/a...

T-Rex: What's mom doing tomorrow?

Utahraptor: So she can watch me argue

T-Rex: She doesn't see that enough at home?

T-Rex: Smiley emoticon

My brother thought this was a dinosaur comics strip, so I turned it into one. I was not sure what to do for the first and second panels

As an aside, the Supreme Court did not take up Novak's case and let the decision that granted qualified immunity stand. So while it appears disclosure of parody may not be required, my efforts at parody should probably avoid probable cause for arrest.

07.12.2025 14:44 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

So it appears deception is a part of parody. And this deception is lawful given a reasonable person ultimately discovers the deception. I feel like compulsory watermarks could struggle with this standard.

The Onion states "[T]he very nature of parody ... is to catch the reader off guard at first glance, after which the 'victim' recognizes that the joke is on him to the extent that it caught him unaware." San Francisco Bay Guardian, Inc. v. Super. Ct., 21 Cal. Rptr. 2d 464, 466 (Ct. App. 1993)

07.12.2025 14:44 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The 6th Circuit agreed earlier that "when it comes to parody, the law requires a reasonable reader standard, not a 'most gullible person on Facebook' standard" and allowed this case to continue, although dismissing some of Novak's claims.

The man who wrote the Onion's Supreme Court brief takes parody very seriously The satirical site submitted a 23-page brief to the Supreme Court in support of a First Amendment case. Mike Gillis, The Onion writer who authored the brief, tells NPR why parody is worth defending.

The Onion as a satirical site has argued that the first amendment protects parody against requirements to disclose its untrue nature. From their brief, "Put simply, for parody to work, it has to plausibly
mimic the original."

Disclaimer: IANAL

Let's assume I create an AI mimicry of the US president touting increased US exports from McDonald's locations on the Moon and Mars. The purpose is to mock government trade practices. I believe this could be parody.

A visible AI watermark would reveal falsity immediately.

07.12.2025 14:44 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is my initial impression too. The intent of a watermark might not be to limit parody, but I feel like that might be an effect. Assuming we don't want to touch parody, how would we avoid impacting use cases like Swift's A Modest Proposal and the Onion?

Santa sitting at a computer in his home looking at the kinds of gifts people are thinking about buying for kids. He comes across a listing for a mystical sword of fire. Santa's advanced computer monitor creates a projection of the sword above the screen. Santa is surprised and says, "The Flaming Sword of Handsomeus Ronicus? To be handled only by the Champions of Light after completing the Trials of Virtue?! Who is gifting this to kids?!" A reindeer nearby says, "Oh, yeah. Ages 300+ for that one. Says it on the box." The text reads: Someday your kids may complete the Trials and attain the Sword. Until then, you should buy age appropriate gifts for kids from retailers you know and trust.

As a prof, I receive several accommodation notices every teaching year. Every time I have reached back out to the UW Disability Office for guidance as to whether my proposed method of accommodation will work for this student. I have never once received a reply.

I think a lot of people don't realize how difficult it is to get accommodations for disability. in school, at work. there are invariably tons of hoops; it's slow. often it's humiliating.

OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

Submitting a 13K-line PR that was entirely AI-written, where the AI inserted copyright headers for someone who isn’t the submitter, that you’re sure is fine because the AI told you it’s fine is so many kinds of broken.
