Two colored comic pages, one with some leaves at the bottom and the next an aerial shot of a woman sitting in a forest near a pond. Above her is a modern looking drone. It reads "Chapter One: 50 days to launch" at the top and "54 years later...." at the bottom.

Two page colored comic spread of a woman walking up through a steep forested hill and into a run down looking town area. The colors are warm and the sun is going down. The woman stops to get a drink from a vending machine near a small robot in front of a mural depicting a woman looking up to the sky. It says "A life among the stars" with the word "bullshit" graffitied across the bottom. She continues on to another rough shod residential building, looking up at it.

1 - Jocelyn and Dave exit the hotel, and begin their walk down the street of Hardground’s “downtown.” Use the references from page 1 for this sequence.

DAVE: Nice to meet you, Josie. My name’s Dave.

JOSIE: How come you have the day off?

DAVE: Oh, uh, my partner and I had a disagreement.

JOSIE: Trouble in paradise?

2 - They pass by a closed flower show called “Bud’s” the paint on the window is all chipped and worn. Hardly legible. The inside is empty.

DAVE: Our relationship isn’t what I thought it was, I guess.

JOSIE: Well, what happened?

DAVE: We’ve been having production challenges. Got picked up by Sheriff Mayberry for accidentally trespassing at that old cabin.

3 - Following behind Dave and Josie we see their backs and the whole street in front of them.

JOSIE: Oh, that old dump. Why were you out there?

DAVE: I thought I was supposed to be asking you the questions?

JOSIE: Haw! Sorry! It’s not often we get strangers in Hardground. New gossip is worth a pretty penny.

4 - Shot from inside Bud’s looking out at Dave and Josie walking.

DAVE: I’ll trade you gossip then.

DAVE: We were up there following a lead. Heard from someone that all the kids used to go up there to party and that’s where Sarah was murdered.

5 - Josie’s curiosity is piqued and she eyes Dave and raises her eyebrow. He gives her a finger wag.

JOSIE: Who told you that?

DAVE: Uh uh. My turn to ask a question.

1 - Splash page of Dave and Josie walking. Maybe the background can be broken into three or four diagonal panels that display the theories that Josie is talking about?

DAVE: You said rumors were circulating around town after Sarah died. What kind of rumors?

JOSIE: Oh gosh, where do I start? There were so many.

JOSIE: There were the usual ones like she had a drug problem or that her boyfriend killed her, but those got dismissed pretty quickly.

JOSIE: Some said that she was hosting wild sex parties at the cabin, but I can tell you that one’s not true. I used to go to those parties and it was just normal teen stuff. Drinking and all that.

JOSIE: A real crazy one was that she was pregnant with Marvin Rainey’s kid and the baby was sacrificed by a satanic cult!

JOSIE: But if I’m being honest I don’t think Mr. Rainey ever had sex with anyone, not even his own wife. No kids.

Dave: Wow. That’s a lot.

1 - Flashback. pov behind Sarah. Sarah walking down the hall of Hardground High school. Centered, lockers on the left and right.

DAVE: You said you used to go to parties at the cabin. Were you there that night?

JOSIE: Yes, I was.

JOSIE: Sarah never showed, yet somehow her body was found there the next morning.

2 - Josie is talking with young Tiffany. Tiff looks exhausted like she said she always is in the morning in chapter 1. Josie is a morning person and is chipper.

DAVE: What do you believe happened then?

JOSIE: To my mind, the simplest answer is usually the correct one.

JOSIE: Sarah was killed by her father…but you didn’t hear that from me.

3 - They both react in shock as Sarah approaches.

DAVE: Whoa. That’s a pretty startling accusation. He was cleared by Sheriff Mayberry pretty early on.

JOSIE: This town is full of men whose crimes are swept under the rug, all for the sake of appearances.

4 - They both hug Sarah. We can’t see her face.

JOSIE: Sarah came to school with a black eye more than once. She tried her best to hide it, but makeup can only cover so much.

5 - Present day. Josie shakes her head.

JOSIE: The whole town knew about it, but nobody did anything because of the age-old excuse — “what happens in the home, stays in the home.”

6 - They pass the Hardground town sign. It reads: “Hardground, Michigan. Find Your Home Here.”

JOSIE: They should make it the damn slogan of this town.

1 - They stand outside of the library. A classic large brick building.

JOSIE: Okay, this is me. One last question for you. You never answered it earlier.

JOSIE: Who told you about the cabin?

DAVE: Isaac James. He told us in exchange for keeping his alibi a secret, but I look forward to ruining his reputation.

2 - Dave looks to Josie, who is upset by this info and how Dave is talking about it.

DAVE: Do you know that pervert?

JOSIE: …

DAVE: Oh.

3 - Dave puts a hand on Josie’s shoulder.

DAVE: Josie, I’m sorry that happened to you.

JOSIE: Yeah, me too.

4 - At the library door. They stand outside. Josie reaches out and grabs Dave’s hand.

JOSIE: I’d appreciate it if you didn’t share that in your documentary, Dave.

DAVE: I can’t promise anything.

DAVE: We have to tell the most compelling story possible. It’s our job.

JOSIE: It’s my life.

5 - Close-up of Dave.

DAVE: We’ll try to be as delicate as possible. We can leave out your name if that makes you feel better.

6 - Josie enters the library without looking back at Dave.

JOSIE: *sigh*

JOSIE: Like I said, everyone already knows. They just didn’t do anything about it.

For the past 40 years, rumors have swirled around the mysterious death of Sarah Shaw. Whispers became gossip, gossip became tall tales, tall tales became legend. But hidden within the stories are rotten truths waiting to be unearthed.

Cover illustration for the comic titled Leaf Lace, by Ashanti Fortson. The title takes up half the composition, hand-lettered in a cursive style to evoke thread and yarn. Beneath the title, a dark-skinned woman kneels over, tenderly and sadly clutching an older woman’s pale hand. Tears fall from the central woman’s face, echoing her teardrop earrings. The older woman is not visible aside from her hand. The central woman’s dark, tightly curled hair sweeps upwards from her form, becoming the backdrop for the title and pressing down on the woman visually. The illustration is done in soft linework and painted purples, with an emphasis on color and light.

Comic page from Leaf Lace by Ashanti Fortson. Through second-person narration, the goddess who spins mortals’ life threads reflects on the time she has shared with her mortal wife. A flashback sequence, framed by intertwining threads of yarn, shows the two meeting when her wife was still young. In the last panel, the mortal woman points out her newly-flowering orchids to her immortal wife, but the mortal woman is now old. The page is illustrated in lush, warm colors.

Comic page from Leaf Lace by Ashanti Fortson. Narration at the top of the page reads, You deserve to live forever. Mnimi, the old, mortal wife of the life-spinning goddess, shakily prepares a pot of tea. She shakes as she carries it to her wife, who is in her studio. Mnimi cries out for Ananke, her wife. She falls, dropping the tray, teapot, and teacups. The panel layout echoes this fall: the panels become irregular, tumbling down the composition. The page is illustrated in purples, hot pinks, and dark teals.

The panels show a delicate teacup falling down and shattering on the floor. White narration text trails down the page alongside the panels; the narration communicates confusion, denial, and grief.
