This week Congress blocked Trump’s 40% cuts to science research, choosing instead to increase funding for NIH & NSF. They also blocked his 70% cuts to “indirect cost reimbursement” for science grants (which fund labs, equipment, support staff at universities). www.bostonglobe.com/2026/02/04/m...

Although the administration may have decided to let dozens of staff go, colleagues and students at SEAS don’t intend to let the layoffs move forward without a fight.”

Harvard’s endowment grew to $56.7 billion, operating revenues are up by 3%, current-use gifts are up by $629 million, & federal funds are almost fully restored. Claiming that layoffs are necessary due to severe financial constraint is untrue and morally wrong.
www.bostonglobe.com/2025/10/16/b...
If University leaders yield to government threats by laying off staff who make Harvard's teaching & research possible—destroying those workers livelihoods—they will also hand the administration exactly what it wants: a weakened University stripped of its conviction, brought to submission by fear.
🚨 Harvard should base critical staffing decisions that will impact staff members livelihoods on each school’s current financial reality, not on the shifting shadow of threats from the Trump administration that may never materialize.

Harvard: “The government's action is unlawful. We are fully committed to maintaining Harvard's ability to host our international students and scholars, who hail from more than 140 countries and enrich the University – and this nation – immeasurably.”
‘In a message to University affiliates, Garber & Manning wrote that the funding would help sustain “critical research activity for a transitional period” and pledged continued support for faculty, postdocs, students, and staff affected by the cuts.’
