I see. Is that because in the case of (...) Qg5+ Kh7 Rc3, there's f6/f5 to clear the second rank and block with the queen? I guess black can afford to give up the queen for a rook, given that white already sacrificed two bishops. It does make sense to play Qf6+ first and only then bring the rook.

Oh, that's interesting! I thought after Bxh7 Kxh7 Qh5 Kg8 Bxg7 Kxg7 Qg5 Kh7 that Rc3 or Rc4 would be winning. But I guess you use a completely different line, because here, Qf6 doesn't come with check. What is the solution? What's wrong with my line?

Yes. As far as puzzles go, this one is not particularly difficult ๐Ÿ˜…

Yes I see now. This exact position is different but it works here as well, since you get Rc4 or Rc3 at the end.

I assume we donโ€™t allow Nf4+ so 1.exd5 Rxb5 2.Ne7+ and we win the bishop on c8.

I think thatโ€™s a fair stance ๐Ÿ˜…

Obviously, in an actual game one should consider whether a particular pawn endgame might be not lost (or, dare I say it, won), when an opportunity arises to go for that pawn ending ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Oh, I agree! You never know for sure whether they made a mistake. You canโ€™t blindly believe them, even if they are a GM. If you did that then you might as well resign on move 1 ๐Ÿ˜…

If my opponent was a GM, I'd assume they had spotted Bxd8 and had something of a response prepared ๐Ÿ˜… In this position, Bxd8 Nxf2 seems strong for black, as there is the threat of smothered mate and also the hanging queen. And white can't play Qd4 because of Bxd4.

I think white can transpose into a typical Yugoslav Attack by playing f3-Be3-Qd2 and 0-0-0. The move Bc4 may have been premature though.

But for effectiveness, Qf5 forces mate in one.
