There is certainly a way you can do this cynically (I didn't think of it at the time, but Rebellion would fall into this), and I DO like cynical sequels too, but I don't think this cynicism is inherrenr to this kind of thing.

I know you haven't seen any of them, but I don't think any of the examples here are particularly cynical. Maybe Advent Children is a little bit, but it's still generally a positive story about moving on after tragedy.

Yes, 06 feels like absolute ass to play and there's a lot of janky feeling mechanics, but none of that is because of bugs, it just feels undercooked. The game really isn't any more buggy than any of the previous Sonic games, I'd even argue its LESS buggy.

80% of the "bugs" that people complain about are either "deliberately going out of my way to interact with a setpiece in a silly way" or some minor visual jank from unfinished animations. The former is something that exists in basically EVERY 3D sonic game.

The narrative that Sonic 06 is some sort of buggy, unplayable mess makes it soooo obvious how many people hating on it just got their opinions from late-00s/early-10s YouTubers.

Oh the story was definitely worse.
I haven't played 4 remake. I'll probably get to it eventually, im sure its fine, but the choice to remake 4 at all was really disappointing.

I liked 2 remake, but it definitely became "I wish this wasn't the whole thing they're doing with the franchise now" after that.

They're still basically completely different games, and I wish people would treat them as such.

It's so fucking frustrating seeing people implicitly reveal that they actually DO think that remakes should replace the originals, while pretending to say the opposite. I hate gamers so much.
