These findings suggest that certain ZIKV-cross-reactive anti-DENV antibodies, especially those capable of activating complement, may help reduce the risk of severe dengue.

Among the different antibody features we analyzed, complement-dependent virolysis using ZIKV virions stood out as the strongest correlate of protection against severe outcomes, including thrombocytopenia and plasma leakage.

We analyzed pre-infection plasma from Nicaraguan children who went on to develop either dengue fever or severe dengue (DHF/DSS) upon secondary DENV infection.
