How many episodes of The Flintstones do you think Francis Ford Coppola watched in 1973 before he found the perfect clip to include in The Conversation.

I still have some residual affection for that one. Basically the only interesting thing happening in superhero comics post-9/11 was when a neolib like Rucka or Morrison would accidentally write a conservative screed.

The gimmick in those issues was supposed to be about the assistant editors messing up the books, and this one is this loving tribute to how cool Ann Nocenti is. Great comic.

I have seen zero jokes on here about a major airport grounding all flights because the army got so scared of a birthday balloon they shot it with a big laser. Where are all the lazy β€œweather balloon” conspiracy gags.

Color comics page, three panels. (1) A peacefully grazing black horse, beautifully defined by broad brushstrokes, (2) suddenly catches the scent (3) of an approaching wolf pack.

This is how Spider-man already works. They let Zeb Wells write one (1) additional Deadpool comic as a consolation before sending him to the glue factory.

Nope, just looked up that scene and I've never seen it before in my life. I watch more "classic" movies than new ones these days but Burt Lancaster has passed me by.

"So Long, Silver Screen" by Blutch. Pure cynicism and he's right, I don't have any idea who "Burt Lancaster" is.

Mike Baron's thesis for that subplot seems to be that its not okay to kill criminals for money, but it is okay to kill communists for the love of the game.

I mainly know Nexus from the issue of "Dreadstar" where he does an intergalactic genocide so I'm surprised how much his early adventures are about him judging another violent vigilante for not killing people the right way.

For years I always thought that Seven Soldiers artist Doug Mahnke was rightwing too but he’s always posting about how much he loves his nonbinary (adult) child so maybe I misjudged.

But the Guibert pages are such a clear example of the "multi-plane" comics idea Arpad talks about, a more direct example than Wallander is even.

Not previously familiar with Guibert, the examples you posted are interesting to compare with the examples in my post you quoted because Guibert is much more traditional. Standard panel boxes and gutters, the character interacting more closely with more representational collaged backgrounds.

Better for him to destroy the paper than to sell it to someone that might publish articles that are mildly critical of his companies.

Good point, and also something not actually attributable to Gaiman. He was in the right place at the right time for that.

Like even Dave Sim was instrumental in the early independent publishing movement. I don’t really buy the idea that Gaiman being popular translates to historical significance.

β€œYou still have to acknowledge this abuser’s influence on the industry/medium” also doesn’t really work with Gaiman because no one wants to admit that in hindsight the real main impact of Sandman was normalizing superhero comics switching artists every 3 issues.
