Solid B+ for me overall. You can tell it's the first book and Brandon is getting his bearings in many ways, but at the same time I think you can read this and then skip ahead to Way of Kings without too much of a disconnect.

they pay off in very satisfying ways IMO. Hrathen's plot isn't *bad*, and it give you some important world-building, but it just never engages me the way the other two do. Not enough to really impact my overall enjoyment though.
