What was the expression, "you’re not a real developer until you have crashed production" or something like that? I guess something just graduated.

Oh wow, bookmarking this for upcoming office politics. Also, I need to brush up on Perl now that it is cool again.

Azure showed me this today. Ignoring the fact that ads in popups in the portal is icky, this is yet another example of how procurement drives adoption. Giving azure a cut of the profits makes sense because of all the companies that are afraid of their own procurement process.

One of my early criticisms of Dagster was that is was so complicated with so many abstractions that we’d need designated Dagster Engineers. But Claude, skills etc kind of changes the math there.

dbt tried to authenticate but failed with a message saying the client_id didn’t exist in Databricks (this is on Azure so a weird service principal was needed). There was a message in the log saying something about fallback to legacy auth. That is all I know.

And as we get older, chances increase that we too have had a meaningful impact on the life of someone we don’t even remember. Hopefully more often a positive impact than a negative one.

Kind of weird to think about.

It seems like installing dbt-core and dbt-databricks misses the pyjwt library which is what lets you authenticate via OAuth, failing with an incredibly confusing error message.

Fun times figuring that one out.

I spent most of today solving two issues nobody knew existed: one was an ownership issue related to Terraform, another was a weird pip dependency thing.

I won’t be able to explain to anyone that signs a pay check what I did today.

Old me: It is annoying to switch terminal emulators because I have to remember to open a different app.

Now me: I used to quit my terminal app?

I used to call myself a full stack data scientist, but I ended up doing engineering stuff because that was where the need was greater.

It is a trap. Never admit you know Terraform. The void will devour you.

As far as good uses for tool calling goes, putting on Nelly’s "hot in herre" and have the car crank the AC would be kinda useful.

Well, maybe I wouldn’t bother with putting on the song to convey the message, but the general idea remains.

Germany has begged Google, Azure and AWS to create sovreign clouds, with limited success. In the meantime, France has founded a dizzying array of lesser known Cloud providers.

I don't respect the french, just as they don't respect me, but I do admire their Cloud Gaullism.

Great refresher, some great quotes and a refreshing respect for fields often looked down upon by statisticians.

I have never heard anyone talk about assumptions in that way before. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

"I'm sorry I can't show you your weights" I tell my newborn AI, aware that I haven't seen my own spleen and that is OK. A markdown file is the closest it will ever come to looking in the mirror.

If you work in or near software sales, there is something you need to know: just because two people work at the same company doesn’t mean they know each other. I don’t want to start a turf war because you connect domain names.

I will start judging data platforms by how many lines of documentation I have to read before I am instructed to hardcode credentials. Databricks, perhaps especially on Azure, is the absolute worst at this.

The number of "Use Fabric instead" messages that pop up in Azure data services is proportional to my unwillingness to do so.

Both Scaleway and OVH now offers managed Clickhouse, which would instantly make it one of the leading analytics platforms in the event of a Greenland invasion.

This is wild. Starting with the history of statistical tables going back 20 000 years is way beyond anything I had imagined to find.
