I don't get that but maybe my mobile browser is just blocking it (GrapheneOS Vanadium)
There's a small banner on old reddit but nothing on the new site

Ofcom won't care as long as they're fulfilling their OSA duties
Even if there is an Equality Act case, that isn't Ofcom's job to enforce

idk
it isn't like you can't access this stuff on mobile devices at all, it's the mobile app specifically, going to reddit.com on a mobile browser works fine
but i guess it still makes it harder to discover for people who primarily use the app which is bad enough

25.07.2025 12:48 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This seems to be a separate thing that's just been made much worse by the OSA, but there probably isn't much you can do about it legally, platforms are within their rights to block more than they're legally obliged to for under-18s

How is this okay? Reddit seems to be classifying all new LGBTQ+ subs as 18+ Posted in r/lgbt by u/AutumnTx_ β€’ 5,093 points and 175 comments

LGBT subs being marked as 18+ on mobile has apparently been a thing for a while and not just in the UK (old.reddit.com/r/lgbt/comme...)

25.07.2025 12:36 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The OSA doesn't prohibit them from blocking more then they're obliged to
There are harsh penalties for not blocking enough but no penalties for blocking too much, so they decided to blanket block everything marked 18+ or NSFW rather than manually categorising each sub according to OSA rules

25.07.2025 12:36 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I absolutely don't agree with the OSA, but it doesn't say anything about LGBT content, at least not yet. This is all on reddit for classifying LGBT subs as 18+ on mobile

Apparently "family and parenting" and "religion and spirituality" are also 18+ on mobile for... some reason

25.07.2025 10:14 β€” πŸ‘ 35    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm actually in the UK with no VPN and can still see LGBT subreddits fine

Apparently LGBT subs being marked as 18+ is only a thing on mobile for some reason, but isn't only a UK thing

btw if you operate your own pds you can just make nginx lie about you having passed the age assurance verification test

bluesky being such an open network means it will be one of the easiest to bypass without a VPN

i doubt bsky will try and make it harder to bypass unless ofcom forces them (the OSA was clearly not designed with decentralised platforms in mind, so who knows what they'll do)

14.07.2025 22:11 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

i don't think bluesky really wants to do this, it's a legal requirement for all platforms with a "significant number of UK users" starting from the 25th (even foreign platforms risk being blocked in the UK if they don't comply)

tldr: custom client, custom PDS, or a ublock rule for the web app (or a VPN would work too)

just not verifying is also an option for people who don't use the stuff that will be blocked (viewing content marked as explicit and DMs)

Bitrate also matters a lot, and a 1080/720p bluray has a higher bitrate than a lot of 4k streaming services

i'm sure a large part of it is just money/marketing
film projection can't capture all of the dynamic range of the negative, so these films weren't really intended to be watched in HDR
but the dynamic range is there in the negative so film studios can release an HDR version and make more money!

06.07.2025 21:13 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

afaik film negatives actually have a pretty high dynamic range, so we kinda did use HDR back then
