One of the impressive items on view at CCAHA's Spring Open House on April 16 will be this original 1859 manuscript, A Declaration of Liberty by the Representatives of the Slave Population of the United States of America, dictated by abolitionist John Brown to his son, Owen. The scroll, which lays out Brown’s anti-slavery views, was likely written in the summer before the raid on Harper’s Ferry, an event that helped spark the American Civil War. NEA Fellow Sandrine Blais will discuss the item’s history and what steps went into preparing it for loan from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for upcoming display at the Museum of the American Revolution.
