Small cluster of autumn leaves still hanging on at the very top of a tall bare tree, probably cottonwood. Black tree branches with pearl grey sky.
The last of the cottonwood leaves still clinging to the tip of the otherwise bare tree. Abscission not yet complete.

Newly sprouted garden greens almost ready to pick. Bricks for steppingstones.
"Salad burnet" growing at right, other winter greens growing nicely, with rocks for steppingstones.
Baby greens made it through a week of cold weather under the row cover. Heading into a week of mildness so I took the blanket off and watered them, covering with chicken wire to keep the critters away - knock on wood. #garden #gardening

A morbidly inclined sheep, who likes to hang around in graveyards, detests parties and owns original pressings of the entire classic run of Leonard Cohen LPs from 1967-1974.
THREAD. A collection of photographs of excellent sheep I have met on walks.

They are the masters of oak propagation. If they have access to other areas, they can fly away and plant new oak trees far from the parent tree, which has all kinds of ecological benefits. Squirrels and gravity usually only plant them close by the source.

If they're lumping spices with herbs, they don't know from beans. Herbs (leafy/stemmy) don't last as long as spices (seeds/bark/roots). Herbs go pretty fast esp when exposed to light/heat (rack of little jars on counter?) Whole spice seeds can last many years just fine (cool dark place.)

First bonsai I've ever found growing in the street, having withstood traffic, streetsweeping machines, summer heat and drought, snow and ice, for who knows how long... and still she persists.

Oh, man! I was watching a couple of Red-tailed Hawks soaring over Central Park's Conservatory Garden, when a solitary Crow decided to harass them! An aerial duel ensued, and I managed to get this shot of the hawk turning on the crow! 🛩️🛩️🛩️ #Hawks #CentralPark #birding

VA Sen. Louise Lucas responds to the following by AG Jason Miyares with the meme, "Your opinions are SHIT. They're fucking shit."
"My office just issued an official opinion explaining that the constitutionally required process to amend the Virginia Constitution cannot be short-circuited by a last-minute vote of the General Assembly taken during an ongoing election." - Jason Miyares

One option is to snip the plant close to the ground, hold it upside down and carry it to a well ventilated place (out of the rain) where it can be hung up to dry and continue to ripen the fruits that are on it.

Winter greens are up and running! Going to be warm this week so no row cover, but it'll go back on when it gets cold again. For now it'll just have chicken wire to keep the groundhog from chomping it down to nothing. #garden #gardening

The little princess helped herself to some candy, with a loud and grateful "Thank You" after taking each one (took 6 or 7, which is fine, there were still some left this morning). They were all delighted at being able to take what they wanted. #Halloween

What an awesome stem on this butternut squash. This is what you can have when you grow your own. Not handled much, just gently snipped from the vine and set onto a table for a month or so to finish ripening. Stem looks like a bronze sculpture. Handsome fruit. #garden #gardening
