You know things are bad when the WSJ puts it this plainly:
"The rewards are going toward capital instead of labor. Profits have soared since the pandemic, and the market value attached to those profits even more. The result: Capital is triumphant, while the average worker ekes out marginal gains."
Screenshot of a Wall Street Journal article titled "The Big Money in Todayโs Economy Is Going to Capital, Not Labor." Two charts show trends since 1980: corporate profits rising as a share of gross domestic income, while labor compensation steadily declines.
The Wall Street Journal just illustrated the core argument of my book: a system rigged to reward capital over labor is one in which even full-time work no longer secures the most basic material needs.
This is the economic order that produces the "working homeless."

I've composited two photos: a broadleaf plantain and an African plantain. One is a weed that grows close to the ground, the other is a large-leafed tropical fruit tree.
Here's a weird etymological convergence:
both of these plants are called "plantains."
-Plantago major, 'broadleaf plantain', an herb that grows as a weed in soil all over Europe.
-'Musa ร paradisiaca', the 'African plantain', which is a relative to the banana, but larger & starchier/less sweet.
