Grows at the end of branching stems in flat clusters 2-4 inches across. Individual flowers are about 1/4 inch in diameter. Leaves: The leaves are feathered and fernlike - millefolium translates to "thousand leafed". Leaves grow up to six inches long and one inch across. The leaves and stems are sometimes covered in fine hairs. Stems: 24-64 inches in height. Often confused for Queen Anne's lace or wild carrot. How to Harvest Yarrow: The small delicate leaves are best harvested in early spring to add to salads. All of the herbaceous parts of the plant should be harvested at full flowering season.

Medicinal Uses for Yarrow: Yarrow is a strong medicine. Too much of a strong yarrow tea can give you vertigo, numbness, or act as a depressant. Pregnant people and children should not use yarrow. Taken in extremely strong quantities, yarrow can cause and abortion, although vomiting would probably occur before this happens. Skin protector - an infusion can treat skin rashes. Antiseptic - it destroys microorganisms that cause infection. A poultice can draw out an infection. Astringent - contracts skin cells and body tissues. Yarrow is commonly used as a first-aid field dressing to stop the flow of blood from a wound. The fresh leaves can be packed into a wound to shrink the blood vessels and stop the bleeding. Or, and infusion can be poured over the wound to stop blood flow. The foliage can be rolled up and pushed gently into the nose to stop a nosebleed. Diaphoretic - promotes sweating. Helpful to break a bad cold and fever, but only if the patient is kept resting, warm, and dry. Analgesic - will relieve pain. Fresh or dried yarrow wil help with pain management. A strong infusion of yarrow tea with relieve headaches, menstrual pain, stomach pains, coughing, and sore throat. Fresh leaves on a wound or painful area will numb the area: leaves can be chewed for a toothache; leaves rubbed on irritated skin will relieve itching; moistened leaves can be put in the outer ear to help an earache. Culinary uses for Yarrow: Yarrow can be used in tea, but has a strong, medicinal taste. Mix with mint, lemon, or ginger root to counteract the taste. Yarrow is also used as a spice - when cooked the bitterness goes away. Use yarrow as an aromatic; it can be a flavorful addition to a salad!

If you plan o harvesting some of these plants, please be respectful and courteous as you take from a plant community. Here are some guidelines for considerate food harvesting: 1. Get permission. Make sure you are allowed to harvest there. 2. Only take what you need and do no harm to the environment you are harvesting from. 3. Make an offering to the plant by cleaning up garbage, watering the plants, saying a blessing, or singing a song. 4. Think good thoughts. Harvest with happiness in your heart and consider how you want others to feel while sharing the fruits of your harvest with you. 5. Harvest safely! Make sure you are harvesting the right plant.
