Whenever a younger writer has the misfortune of working with me and they ask me how to write better, I tell them to cheat, because that's what I do. Figure out your favorite writer, figure out WHY they're your favorite writer, and then just do what they do.

Dan's one of my favorite writers.

One of the reasons he always felt like a friend was because he wrote in a way that was so genuine, so honest, so inquisitive and curious and tenacious and funny and deeply, deeply decent. Just look at this headline and photo choice.

I am absolutely shocked and gutted by this. I never knew Dan personally, but he still felt like a friend in the way that every favorite writer (and former co-worker) does.
