All that being said I had enough fun to feel compelled to finish. The artstyle and world are gorgeous and unique. The story (minus the finale) was very compelling and the use of music is phenomenal. If this came out 20 years ago it would be in some top ten of the year lists.

The gameplay loop is fun but got old by the third act, making the finale feel longer than it actually was. The story kinda stumbles in the third act too. Introducing new characters (including a new main antagonist) in a way that felt rushed and undeserved.

The way it’s formatted feels very inspired by games like Voodoo Vince, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Psychonauts, and other games of that ilk… for better or for worse. I love a lot of those games but game development has learned a lot of lessons since that era not present in this game.

Finished South of Midnight. This game feels like its for a very specific type of gamer. If you arent nostalgic for early 2000s action platformers or looking for a very authentic Black story I would skip this. 😕 #SouthOfMidnight
