The Kremlin’s plot to kill NATO’s credibility The alliance needs an emphatic response to Russian air incursions

NATO’s response to the drones over Poland must be accompanied by spine from Donald Trump. Despite having promised to end the war in Ukraine in a day, he has let Vladimir Putin lead him by the nose

Independent journalist Casey Newton. "Last year, when I asked you how you wanted me to cover AI, you told me to avoid making predictions about what would happen, and focus more on the day-to-day developments that signal what’s actually happening. (You also told me to be specific with my terms. With that in mind, when I say “AI” in this piece, I’m talking about generative AI and the LLMs that power them — the technology that underpins ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and all the rest.)

"I took this as an invitation to investigate whether generative AI is real — that is, a genuine innovation that will likely sustain a large and profitable industry."

It’s alarming to see what is happening in many newspapers of record, after many decades of agreement on the core principles of sound journalism. An informed citizenry is the bedrock of democracy, and we need to look out for this more than ever.

As an old school journalist, I believe the distinction between news stories and opinion pieces should be maintained. But ideally both include judgments based on analysis and evidence, and the business side of papers should recognize the limits of its own expertise./2

A few observations: This tool should itself be independently audited for bias before any deployment. Much of AI is trained on biased data sets, and bias is often introduced via design assumptions that are not tested./1
