It's a pretty big deal that the NYC Bar Association--one of the most prominent and respected bar associations in the country--is accusing the President of ordering the "unlawful summary execution," i.e. murder--of civilians in violation of US and international law. www.nycbar.org/press-releas...

How I Got My Career in Foreign Policy: Farah Pandith
Farah Pandith has spearheaded efforts to counter violent extremism in both Republican and Democratic administrations. CFR sat down with her to understand where such efforts stand today and what it’s …
"The extremist momentum that has been built since 9/11 is shocking."
Love this new @cfr.org series on foreign policy careers. Here, the great @farahpandith.bsky.social tells Ivana Saric about her pioneering work in countering violent extremism. www.cfr.org/article/how-...

The Kremlin’s plot to kill NATO’s credibility
The alliance needs an emphatic response to Russian air incursions
NATO’s response to the drones over Poland must be accompanied by spine from Donald Trump. Despite having promised to end the war in Ukraine in a day, he has let Vladimir Putin lead him by the nose

@kschake congratulations! I look forward to reading this very timely history. Just followed you and trying to build up my blue sky alternative as Twitter is just too terrible.

Former senior officials are calling on Congress to investigate a troubling pattern of firings of senior women from top military and diplomatic jobs under the Trump administration. If you share this concern, please call your members of Congress.

Trump’s DEI Purge in the Military Puts U.S. National Security at Risk
The administration’s “anti-DEI” campaign targets vital expertise and experience in government agencies.
My latest piece about the latest firing of a senior woman leader—VADM Chatfield. This is her third assignment with NATO at a critical moment in the Ukraine war and US role in NATO. Her firing is the opposite of meritocracy. www.cfr.org/blog/trumps-...

The Long, Proud History of Women in the Military
Women in the military have been removed from the Department of Defense and Arlington Memorial Cemetery's websites: why this is happening and how it can be reversed.
Why are women being deleted from DoD and other U.S. websites? Find out here and express your concern to your congressional representatives. Women are a vital part of our national security establishment, and too many women are being dismissed without cause. www.cfr.org/blog/long-pr...

Independent journalist Casey Newton. "Last year, when I asked you how you wanted me to cover AI, you told me to avoid making predictions about what would happen, and focus more on the day-to-day developments that signal what’s actually happening. (You also told me to be specific with my terms. With that in mind, when I say “AI” in this piece, I’m talking about generative AI and the LLMs that power them — the technology that underpins ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and all the rest.)
"I took this as an invitation to investigate whether generative AI is real — that is, a genuine innovation that will likely sustain a large and profitable industry."

It’s alarming to see what is happening in many newspapers of record, after many decades of agreement on the core principles of sound journalism. An informed citizenry is the bedrock of democracy, and we need to look out for this more than ever.

As an old school journalist, I believe the distinction between news stories and opinion pieces should be maintained. But ideally both include judgments based on analysis and evidence, and the business side of papers should recognize the limits of its own expertise./2

A few observations: This tool should itself be independently audited for bias before any deployment. Much of AI is trained on biased data sets, and bias is often introduced via design assumptions that are not tested./1
