The Cult News Network The special prosecution team led by Min Joong-ki, investigating allegations related to Kim Keon-hee, has identified circumstances in which Han Hak-ja, the Unification Church leader, embezzled approximately 500 million won in church funds for personal purposes, including purchasing luxury goods and jewelry. According to the indictment of Han, obtained by this newspaper on the 18th, the special counsel included these details while indicting Han on charges including occupational embezzlement and violations of the Political Funds Act. According to the special counsel, Jung Won-ju, former chief of staff to the president, instructed Lee Mo-shi, the spouse of Yun Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church’s global headquarters, in May 2022, to pay 420 million won to S Jewelry for the cost of brooches and earrings to be given to Han. Lee, who served as the head of the Unification Church’s financial management division, initially paid the amount with personal funds and then submitted documentation to make it appear as church event expenses, thereby reclaiming the cost from church funds. From August 2022 to May 2023, Lee allegedly embezzled approximately 534 million won in church funds by fabricating receipts for personal expenses, such as meals and medical costs, and processing them as Unification Church-related expenses. Meanwhile, the special counsel determined that the Unification Church had agreed in March to April 2022 to provide so-called “split donations” to the People Power Party’s 17 metropolitan and provincial offices to support Yoon Suk-yeol, then the People Power Party’s presidential candidate. In particular, it was judged that after former head Yun instructed subordinate district leaders to support former President Yoon, a total of 210 million won was sent down under the guise of missionary support funds. The district leaders then reportedly met with People Power Party lawmakers, expressed their support, and distributed approximately 144 million won in donations after splitting the funds. The special counsel assessed that in November 2022, when Geonjin Beopsa Jeon Seong-bae requested the Unification Church to recruit followers to join the party to support a specific candidate in the following year’s People Power Party leadership election, the church decided to use its organization and finances to support former President Yoon and others. Additionally, the special counsel found that Han and others purchased items worth a total of 82.93 million won, including a Chanel bag worth 12.71 million won and a Graff necklace worth 62.2 million won, using church funds, and used them as gifts for Kim. Furthermore, a Chanel bag worth approximately 8.02 million won and one bottle of Cheon Su Sam concentrated tea, presumed to have been delivered to Kim, were also identified as being funded by the Unification Church. The special counsel judged that the church provided these high-value items to expand Han’s religious influence and request various forms of support. Additionally, the special counsel viewed that the Unification Church withdrew a portion of the “Cheonseung Fund,” created from congregants’ donations, in cash without recording it in the accounts and submitted it to Han. Some of the donations sent by overseas congregants for construction funds, including for Cheonjeong Palace, were also transferred to Han or used for the personal purposes of former chief Jung, with approximately 500 million won embezzled in the process. It was investigated that Lee fabricated a list of fake overseas missionaries, created a resolution for “missionary activity funds,” and raised 690,000 US dollars (approximately 900 million won) under this pretext, which was then delivered to former chief Jung. The Cult News Network NEW YORK (VINnews) — After the Lev Tahor cult was dismantled last month in Guatemala and the families were dispersed to the United States, Canada, Israel, and other countries, around ten families of former cult members who had recently relocated to New York secretly regrouped. The families had regained custody of their children from Guatemalan child welfare authorities on the condition that they leave the cult. However, they have now fled once again, apparently in an attempt to maintain the cult’s customs in a foreign country. According to sources familiar with the matter, the escape took place during the Jewish holidays of Simchat Torah and Shemini Atzeret. The families boarded a flight to a new destination,Honduras, a country where children’s rights are not a top priority. The order to escape specifically during the holiday, thereby violating religious laws, came from the cult leaders who are currently serving long prison sentences in Brooklyn for serious crimes they committed against children and other members of the cult. The reason for the timing, it is claimed, was to avoid detection that might thwart the escape. Another source said: “Honduras is a corrupt country, very similar to Guatemala. This was all orchestrated through manipulations by the imprisoned leaders, who convinced the families that it’s better to live in a country with no Jewish presence than to stay in America.” This is not the first time Lev Tahor leaders have violated the Sabbath and instructed cult members to do so. In October 2021, dozens of Lev Tahor members landed in Moldova on the Sabbath, were denied entry, and deported back to Turkey immediately after the Sabbath ended. Cult members have been expelled from every location they tried to settle in, after authorities were informed they posed a danger. The Cult News Network Aformer member of the Manson Family will remain behind bars after California Gov. Gavin Newsom denied her parole. Newsom announced his decision Oct. 13, rejecting the parole board’s recommendation to release Patricia Krenwinkel, 77, citing her “unreasonable danger to society.” In the decision, according to CBS News, Newsom wrote, “I have concluded that the evidence in Ms. Krenwinkel’s case demonstrates that she lacks the requisite insight she needs to be safely released.” Although he acknowledged that she had “engaged in productive introspection,” including advancing her education, vocational training and participating in service dog work, Newsom said that she still wasn’t ready for release. Pointing to a finding from a psychologist who evaluated Krenwinkel, he said, she had “some deficits in self-awareness” and had a “tendency to externalize blame for her prior transgressions,” according to the decision also obtained by Fox News. Who is Patricia Krenwinkel? Krenwinkel was one of cult leader Charles Manson’s most devoted followers and participated in a bloody two-day killing spree in 1969 that left seven dead including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, her friends and unsuspecting couple Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Convicted in 1971 of seven counts of first-degree murder, Krenwinkel was originally sentenced to death, however, her sentence was later commuted to life in prison after the state briefly ruled the death penalty to be unconstitutional. A parole board has twice recommended her release, most recently in May, but Newsom has intervened both times to deny her parole. In his 2002 decision, Newsom praised her for demonstrating “positive institutional conduct” and “effusive remorse for her leadership role in the Family,” but he concluded that she should not be released. “While Ms. Krenwinkel has matured in prison and engaged in commendable rehabilitative efforts,” he wrote at the time, “her efforts have not sufficiently reduced her risk for future dangerousness.” Krenwinkel was present the night Manson’s followers, including Charles “Tex” Watson and Susan Atkins, broke into the home of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and brutally killed her and others at her Cielo Drive property in Los Angeles’ Benedict Canyon. The Cult News Network Tom Cruise single again: Social media blames Scientology for Ana de Armas’ split, ‘She refused to become a member’ Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas have ended their relationship after several months of dating. Although they enjoyed time together, they realized they were better off as friends. Both will continue to work together in the upcoming film Deeper. Tom Cruise, 63, and Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, 37, have reportedly ended their relationship after several months of dating. The celebrity pair were first linked in February. They confirmed their romance in spring when they were spotted holding hands in Vermont. The star couple’s relationship included private jet trips to Madrid, a helicopter ride to London for Ana’s 37th birthday and appearances at high-profile events like David Beckham’s 50th birthday party. “Tom and Ana had a good time together, but their time as a couple has run its course. They are going to remain good friends, but they aren’t dating anymore,” the source told the publication. “They just realised they weren’t going to go the distance and that they are better off as mates. The spark had gone between them. But, they still love each other’s company, and they’ve both been really adult about it,” the insider said. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas are set to star together in Deeper. The upcoming supernatural thriller is directed by Doug Liman, who previously worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. “She’s already been cast in his next film, so they will continue to work together,” the source added. Many social media users have blamed Scientology for the reported breakup. “We may know the answer soon if we see the Scientologists bad-mouthing her,” came from a Reddit user. The Cult News Network There are times when Jay Spring believes he is “the greatest person on planet Earth”. The 22-year-old from Los Angeles is a diagnosed narcissist, and in his most grandiose moments, “it can get really delusional”, he says. “You are on cloud nine and you’re like, ‘Everyone’s going to know that I’m better than them … I’ll do great things for the world’.” For Spring, these periods of self-aggrandisement are generally followed by a “crash”, when he feels emotional and embarrassed by his behaviour, and is particularly vulnerable to criticism from others. He came to suspect that he may have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) after researching his symptoms online – and was eventually diagnosed by a professional. But he doesn’t think he would have accepted the diagnosis had he not already come to the conclusion on his own. “If you try to tell somebody that they have this disorder, they’ll probably deny it,” he says – especially if they experience feelings of superiority, as he does. “They’re in a delusional world that they made for themselves. And that world is like, I’m the greatest and nobody can question me.” Though people have been labelled as narcissists for more than a century, it’s not always clear what is meant by the term. “Everyone calls everybody a narcissist,” says W Keith Campbell, psychology professor at the University of Georgia and a narcissism expert. The word is “used more than it should be” – but when it comes to a formal diagnosis, he believes many people hide it, as there is so much stigma around the disorder. A narcissist will tend to have “an inflated view of oneself”, “a lack of empathy”, and “a strategy of using people to bolster one’s self-esteem or social status through things like seeking admiration, displaying material goods, seeking power,” says Campbell. Those with NPD may be “extremely narcissistic”, to the point that “they’re not able to hold down stable relationships, it damages their jobs”, and they have a “distorted view of reality”, he says. Though up to 75% of people diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder are men, research from the University of London published last year suggests this figure does not mean there are fewer narcissistic women, but that female narcissism is more often presented in the covert form (also defined as vulnerable narcissism), which is less commonly diagnosed. “Men’s narcissism tends to be a bit more accepted, just kind of like everything in society,” says Atlanta-based Kaelah Oberdorf, 23, who posts about her NPD and borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnoses on TikTok. It is not uncommon to see the two disorders co-occur. The Cult News Network An appeals court has reversed a decision by a federal judge in White Plains who dismissed a citizens’ environmental lawsuit brought against Dragon Springs Buddhist Inc. in Orange County. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit vacated the dismissal on Sept. 16 and mandated on Oct. 9 that the district court resume proceedings. Dragon Springs is a nonprofit organization that owns 393-acres in Cuddebackville, Deerpark. The Falun Gong spiritual movement that promotes traditional Chinese culture in opposition to the Chinese Communist Party, and the Shen Yen dance company, are based there. NYenvironcom and three homeowners who live near the Dragon Springs compound sued the organization under the federal Clean Water Act. They claimed that Dragon Springs had been discharging wastewater and stormwater containing high levels of fecal matter, due to an illegal construction project and an inadequate wastewater treatment plant. Allegedly polluted waters then drained into the Basher Kill, the Neversink River and ultimately the Delaware River. They wanted the court to stop the purported pollution and make Dragon Springs clean up the grounds. The federal Clean Water Act enables private citizens to enforce environmental laws. But first, they must give 60 days notice to the suspected polluters, of their intention to sue, and to government environmental regulators who may take over the case. And they must provide details about the alleged violations and violators. Dragon Springs argued that the 60-day notice provided insufficient information about when and where pollution was discharged, who was responsible, and the specific standards that were violated. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas agreed and dismissed the case in September 2024. NYenvironcom and the homeowners appealed the decision. Three Second Circuit appellate judges based in Manhattan found that NYenvironcom and the homeowners did provide sufficient advance notice of their intention to sue Dragon Springs. Congress did not intend for the 60-day notice to be onerous, the appellate judges said. Rather, citizens, who may have limited access to a defendant’s property, must give a clear indication of their intent. They must give regulatory agencies enough information for deciding whether to act, and give potential defendants enough information on which to act. NYenvironcom and the homeowners had included nine specific test results and dates where contaminated water was detected. They identified where the alleged pollution was “escaping” Dragon Springs’ property. Dragon Springs “cannot credibly claim to have been confused about what they were accused of,” the judges stated. The 60-day notice had enough information for Dragon Springs to identify violations, bring itself into compliance, and make a costly lawsuit unnecessary. “That’s enough,” the appellate justices ruled. “That’s the purpose of the notice requirement.” Content retrieved from: https://westfaironline.com/courts/dragon-springs-buddhist-loses-appellate-court-decision/ .

The Cult News Network Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas surprised fans in 2025 when rumors began swirling that they were dating — with photos of them holding hands and walking the actress’s dogs seeming to confirm it. But it looks like the relationship didn’t last long, and the internet already has its theory: she got spooked when he allegedly tried to bring her into his church/cult. We kind of saw it coming. Back in August, reports hinted that the pair were traveling everywhere together, which fueled speculation about a romance. Still, those who know Tom’s past relationships suspected history might repeat itself — and apparently, it did. According to The Sun, the couple’s spark “fizzled out” after less than a year together. Though they still enjoy each other’s company, they’ve decided to stay friends rather than continue romantically. Neither Tom nor Ana ever publicly confirmed their relationship, but paparazzi photos of them together made it clear they were more than friends. Now, however, fans believe the breakup might have something to do with Tom’s deep involvement in Scientology, a belief system that has reportedly played a part in several of his previous relationships. In August, Daily Mail revisited how many of Cruise’s relationships follow the same pattern: everything begins with romance and affection — until he encourages his partner to take introductory Scientology courses. The problem, according to reports, is what comes next. Once the women join, they’re allegedly introduced to the belief that “spiritual parasites” cling to their souls and must be exorcised over time through expensive auditing sessions. The Cult News Network Nineteen years after the end of Warren Jeffs’ cult, something good finally came out of it. A couple of teens who were born into the cult entered a fixed marriage, only to later reconnect after both escaped. Now they’re a shining example that there’s life after cultism. In 2003, Angela Johnson was a 16-year-old teenager — a little rebellious toward authority, eager to learn more about life, and, much like everyone else at the time, a Britney Spears fan. But unlike most of her peers, she had to do all this in secret because she was in a cult — the notorious Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, to be exact. At that time, the cult was under the firm control of Warren Jeffs. Although Angela revealed to People that she didn’t have direct interactions with him, the cult was very much built in his image. Polygamy was expected, and education was discouraged for young girls. Angela herself wasn’t expected to get past the 10th grade — and that was the case for most girls born into the cult. What Angela was “born for” was getting a husband. And the cult chose Cade Johnson, 19, for her. By the time the two were forced to marry, Jeffs had already risen into the top 10 of the FBI’s Most Wanted List — usually reserved for some of the most sadistic minds in American history. Angela and Cade exchanged vows in a laundromat because, at that time, the ceremony wasn’t allowed to take place in a church. A red flag in itself — and a fact about their marriage that Angela struggles to fathom even to this day. The Cult News Network A lawyer representing 150 victims of the Jesus Army said plans to allow people accused of child abuse to receive a share of the cult’s fortune were “shameful”. A BBC investigation revealed 172 former loyal members of the disgraced Northamptonshire-based evangelical sect would receive much larger payouts than those awarded to victims under a redress scheme. It is understood some who have been people accused of perpetrating or covering up abuse could be among the beneficiaries of the group’s assets – which is estimated to be more £50m – a prospect survivors have described as “sickening”. Malcolm Johnson, a lawyer from Lime Solicitors, said the only right action to take was redirect the leftover assets for charitable use. A spokesperson for the Jesus Fellowship Community Trust (JFCT), which is winding up the group’s affairs, said the identities of the fund’s beneficiaries were not being disclosed to protect the privacy of victims who made their allegations in confidence. He insisted the trustees had consulted with Mr Johnson over a long period of time and had no powers to redirect the assets. Under a court order, anyone with unresolved claims against the JFCT must have made an application by 16 October, otherwise they will have permanently lost the ability to do so. Over 50 years the Jesus Fellowship acquired dozens of large houses and successful businesses, paid for by its 3,500 community members who often put everything they earned and owned into a trust. Documents seen by the BBC reveal the group’s assets in 2017 were valued at £58.6m. When the trust closed in 2020, the assets were liquidated and about £25m was divided among the remaining 172 members – known as listed beneficiaries – in the form of relief of need, or return of capital. Beneficiaries have also reported receiving a lump sum of £63,000. Last year the trust compensated 601 victims who say they suffered sexual, physical and emotional abuse in the Jesus Fellowship, with individuals receiving about £13,000 each on average. The damages were partly paid for by insurers and court papers show £25m remains in the trust, which will now also be shared among the listed beneficiaries. It would mean about 10% of the Jesus Fellowship’s total assets have been spent on victims, though the trustees insisted the true figure was closer to 20% Read more https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czjv3nwkn94o.amp Content retrieved from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czjv3nwkn94o.amp .

The Cult News Network About 60 former members of the Jesus Army, a cult described as one of the most abusive in British history, have come forward with new allegations against the group, according to a lawyer representing claimants. The cases range from allegations of sexual or domestic abuse to claims for unpaid work from women who served as “domestic sisters” in the cult, which at its peak in the mid-2000s had several thousand members, many of whom surrendered their assets to the leadership. Married women living in the group’s many communal houses were required to work long hours, unpaid, and some lawyers believe they were treated as modern slaves. Some of the claimants also allege they reported abuse to the Jesus Army’s leadership, who failed to act. The approaches have been made to Kathleen Hallisey, a solicitor with Scott-Moncrieff & Associates, after a Guardian piece and BBC documentary, Inside the Cult of the Jesus Army, in July. Hallisey is now preparing 24 civil claims against the Jesus Fellowship Community Trust (JCFT), which has been tasked with winding up the group’s assets after its closure in 2019. She said: “The number of new cases is way beyond what I expected in terms of more people coming forward.” Read more https://cultnews.net/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wp-scraper&pid=13436&_wpnonce=e2e2558171 Content retrieved from: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/oct/14/new-allegations-sexual-domestic-abuse-jesus-army-cult .

The Cult News Network California Gov. Gavin Newsom has reversed a parole board’s decision to release Patricia Krenwinkel, a former follower of cult leader Charles Manson and one of the perpetrators of the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders. In a decision issued Oct. 13 and obtained by Fox News, Newsom wrote that Krenwinkel, now 77, “lacks the requisite insight she needs to be safely released.” “Ms. Krenwinkel has engaged in productive introspection,” the governor’s order says, quoting the psychologist who evaluated her, “but she exhibits some deficits in self-awareness, such as a tendency to externalize blame for her prior transgressions.” Newsom said he agreed those factors remain relevant to her current risk and concluded that, despite her “commendable” progress, she “currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released.” Krenwinkel was 21 years old when she joined other members of Manson’s so-called “Family” in two nights of killings that left seven people dead, including actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant. According to the governor’s summary of the case, Krenwinkel and others fatally stabbed Tate’s friend Abigail Folger, and helped restrain or attack several of the victims. The following night, the group murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, leaving phrases such as “Death to Pigs,” “Rise” and “Healter [sic] Skelter” written in blood around their home. The parole board has held 17 hearings for Krenwinkel since 1977, denying parole 14 times, and she voluntarily declined to seek it once. In May 2022, the board found her suitable for release, but Newsom reversed the decision that October, citing her lack of insight and tendency to externalize blame. Krenwinkel’s challenge to that reversal was denied by the Los Angeles County Superior Court in January 2024, and the ruling was later affirmed on appeal. They've repelled from Black Hawk helicopters, thrown journalists and protestors to the ground, and belligerently refused to unmask, provide identification, or present warrants for the people they're kidnapping. Among the social media videos documenting this despicable stormtrooper behavior came the image of a priest being hit in the head and knocked to the ground by a pepper ball shot from an ICE building rooftop. We've homed in on this disturbing moment to ask if what we'd seen so far had not crossed a red line for the American public, what does it mean to shoot at a priest protesting injustice in prayer? If Scientology Ruled the World pt. 2 with Jon Atack In this episode, we continue exploring Jon Atack’s latest work, "If Scientology Ruled the World: Nazi Occultists, Sex Magick, Space Aliens, and the Second Coming." In our previous episode with Jon, we began unpacking the intricate web of beliefs that form the foundation of Scientology. Today, we'll go even deeper, examining the historical connections between Scientology and other esoteric movements, from Madame Blavatsky's Theosophy to surprising links with occult practices. Jon brings his unique perspective as both a former high-ranking Scientologist and as the author of the definitive historical account of the organization. His firsthand experience, combined with decades of research, makes him one of the most knowledgeable voices on this subject. We'll explore ideas about aliens, ancient civilizations, and the bizarre cosmology that forms Scientology's secret upper-level teachings. Jon will help us understand how these beliefs connect to broader patterns found in destructive authoritarian groups throughout history. The Cult News Network After decades spent weaving a formidable web of religious, business and media companies, the Unification Church — formally known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification — now finds itself under the harsh light of official inquiries in both Korea and Japan. Long dismissed by traditional Christian denominations for its departures from mainstream theology, the church today faces a different set of questions — not about its creed, but about its conduct: how it raises and spends its money, and how it has sought to embed itself in political power. Led by its 82-year-old matriarch, Han Hak-ja, the church is now ensnared in twin scandals. In Korea, prosecutors allege that Han and her aides bribed political figures, including former first lady Kim Keon Hee, in a bid to curry favor with former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration. In Japan, the church faces a court-ordered dissolution after investigators traced years of coercive fundraising and its influence over lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The scrutiny marks a dramatic reversal for a movement long branded a cult but tolerated for its reach and wealth. To understand why two governments are now turning on the Unification Church, one must examine its unusual theology — and the worldly empire it built in the name of salvation. The Cult News Network aura McConnell was raised in the secretive Truth Two by Twos cult in rural northern Victoria until she was shunned at the age of 19. The group is also sometimes referred to as The Church With No Name, The Truth or The Way. “I was a queer kid who did not want to get married and have children, which was expected of me,” she told the inquiry. “I wanted to get an education and a career, and I pushed back on gender norms and behaviours and I was pushed out for that. “I grew up surrounded by family violence, CSA [child sex abuse], grooming, physical and verbal abuse, spiritual and religious abuse. I have CPTSD [complex post-traumatic stress disorder] and I live with chronic pain.” Her story is among the 317 submissions to the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into the recruitment and impact of cults and fringe groups. On Monday, she revealed her experiences under parliamentary privilege. Survivors are calling for targeted laws and a specialised social services department to help cult members leave. Of the respondents to the inquiry, 95 per cent said they had suffered psychological harm, including mind control, emotional abuse, fear of punishment if they left, isolation from family and friends and apocalyptic teachings.
