If I'm not outside looking at plants I want to be teaching about them, writing about them, or playing with them in my kitchen

Yikes! Don't people realize that these things are still alive and breathing? It's not like those lenticels are just there for decoration.

23.10.2025 12:24 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If history teaches us one thing
Never trust a man who would be king
Who seeks all power for himself
To burnish his prestige and wealth
And a nation born in revolution
Should know this offers no solution
For there can be no liberty
Where one man rules with impunity

Oh one of my favorites! It is such a joy to encounter it giving a bright pop to the trail.
07.10.2025 18:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0OMG I can't even count how many hours have I spent ripping this stuff out of my mother's yard. And untangling it from actually desirable plants. And letting the expletives fly. She moved, and it came with her in some pots and now it's all over the new yard too. Worse than oxalis.
30.09.2025 19:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"nobody calls a 'follicetum'" had me laughing so hard. The only place I've ever seen that term is the Spjut book.

Did anybody else try entering Urticadioica into #letterboxed yesterday? Yeah, I know. Two words. Can't do that. But it was so exciting to see it in the letters that I had to try.

And thank *you* Jamie. Now I'll have to find me some Kars 4 Kids ads to swamp it out.

Sadly they didn't use our suggested cover image below (made by the inimitable Andi Kur).

For #thicktrunktuesday here's a Sequoiadendron from a 3-day stop in Kings Canyon National Park on my way home from #Botany2025. Trunk is thick all the way up. Hiking and life companion at the base for scale.
05.08.2025 21:10 β π 30 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0I really think that "squirtable" is a word. For that matter, "nonsquirtable" is a word. That would be all 12 letters! But #letterboxed thinks otherwise.

And I should have told you this earlier, but your 2023 paper on species is one of the most elegantly written and thoughtful papers I have read in a long time. Seriously a joy to read. I need to read it again, in fact. ssbbulletin.org/index.php/bs...
We should get style points in Letter Boxed, even if answers take more than two words. Mine from yesterday: ozone engulfing gyres. Efficiency doesn't always have to be the goal when there are so many great words out there, waiting to be seen.
26.06.2025 17:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0RUIZ: Did you read the report & fact-check its sources prior to publication?
RFK JR: I did not fact check
RUIZ: It included citations to sources that don't exist. How does that happen?
RFK JR: All of the foundational assertions are accurate
RUIZ: They did not exist. How can they be accurate?
Even the original context is disturbing. Removing the lawn has nothing to do with saving water. It's all about hating plants. Never trust anyone who hates plants.

Palo Alto through Mountain View and towards Sunnyvale was packed! People stood along El Camino Real (or No-Real) from Tesla dealership to Tesla dealership. We walked several miles from MV towards PA and it was very crowded. Lots of honking in support, too!
