Looking ahead to Saturday night into Sunday of next weekend we could see a significant winter storm arrive across the region. Snow levels will be dropping as well down to around 2,500 feet. A few models indicate even lower snow level potential heading into the week of the 16th.

Snowfall amounts have been updated overnight. We are likely to see as much as 6-12” of new snowfall across the Cascades through tomorrow morning before the cold front progresses well to the east. Trailing showers will bring more light snow to as low as 4,500-5,000 feet.

The Storm Prediction Center at NOAA has issued a general thunderstorm outlook for today for areas in light green. The coverage area includes the coast from Coos County northward. This could result in a few lightning strikes and gusty winds at times near active storms.

It is snowing again at Crater Lake National Park and Willamette Pass. Here is a look at the Steel Visitor Center and ODOT Trip Check webcams this morning. Snow levels are around 5,000 feet to the north and 6,000 feet across our forecast area. They will be dropping as the cold front tracks east.

Water vapor imagery shows a well defined cold front offshore and clouds with some precipitation starting to arrive along the coast. The primary band of posture remains offshore. There is plenty of cold air on the back side of the front near the center of the low.

A deep area of low pressure is spinning in the Gulf of Alaska. This will help feed a cold front along the coast by tomorrow. It will take until Sunday for the front to move inland and east of the Cascades.

The potential of seeing a moderate risk of heavy snowfall across the Cascades arrives around the 14th-16th of February. This has been showing up in the longer range models for some time now. Confidence is growing we will see heavier snow develop.
