In 2017 the entire Flickr.com photo archive was almost deleted by its owner Verizon. The @flickrfdn.bsky.social is working heroically to preserve these photos for the next 100 years. They have developed a toolkit called Data Lifeboat which allows anyone to create a Flickr timecapsule. #Europeana2025

For about a year, I worked with a retired British academic named Alasdair Spark to solve a mystery: where did the original photo from the end of The Shining come from, and where/when was it captured?
Last week, we finally found the answer.

One of the things the Field Museum (Chicago, US) displayed from its collection in 1898 was a "Moon Model."
With a 19.2-foot diameter, it was one of the largest and most elaborate representations of the Moon at the time. It was displayed until the 1980s.

TIL: Gas bag vehicles were built during World War One and World War Two... as an improvised solution to the shortage of gasoline. The vehicles consumed βtown gasβ or βstreet gasβ, a by-product of the process of turning coal into cokes (which are used to make iron).
