Rarely does the the aurora explode this fast, the peak of the substorm lasted all of 10 minutes.... it leaves one gob smacked, and one questions "What is Reality"?

Watch the Sun and remember that Coronal Holes(51 and 52) that are negative in the Spring, and are Transequatorial, produce magnificent geomagnetic storms.

Last night West of Calgary Seebe, Alberta, this is a SAID arc in an enveloped auroral arc, or something. First time that I have seen anything like it, my camera is pointing NNW for the first shot, time 20250501T0540Z, the second shot is taken to the ESE, the time was the same.

At the end of the first substorm a SAID aka STEVE formed and stayed visible for about 30-40 minutes. It was difficult to make out with the eye, so I set my camera's to ISO 5000, F2.8, 13-15 seconds. There was no Picket Fence that I could see.

It took awhile for the charge to build but when the substorm hit it was a beautiful sight to behold. This was a night where the pond was as still as a reflection in a mirror, and I was fortunate enough to be able to capture the aurora.
It appears that the culprit behind the Northward trend in the BZ is a CIR From Coronal Hole 35. Notice the rise in density and the drop in the solar wind speed usually indicative of a CIR

16.04.2025 21:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And just like that the field swings North! Won't be any aurora tonight if this keeps up!
ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 8, 9-

The slower stream left the Sun at a max velocity of 300km/s the second at 660km/s. I believe that the 2nd would have overtaken the first, and what we are seeing is the fields interacting, hence the time differential in the flux rope change.
16.04.2025 17:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How about that folks the field finally turned in favour of an auroral show at upper lower latitudes. If this was later in the day this would be a "Get Out There" post. Sadly we will have to sit on our hands and sweat it out till it gets dark, here's hoping! #Aurora #Auroraborealis #northernlights
16.04.2025 17:30 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0This bodes well for those in the West. It appears that the main bulk of the CME is 4 hours behind the initial bulk.

Coronal hole streams seem to affect the aurora and we see different structures that we see in a CME geomagnetic storm. This is the first major substorm of the morning, it lasted a whopping 60 minutes!
