On my anvils I usually round the first three inches or so next to the bick on both the front and back edges. But really you can put them where you wantโฆ. Itโs nice to have various edges to use.

21.11.2024 17:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Well done! Good work. Yeah those edges look really sharp. You very rarely want sharp edges on your anvil. They mark your work, get chipped and hammering corners into stuff makes stress points. Take a grinder to it and make yourself some round edges.

For a tighter curve, just feed slower with the left hand
Does this help?
21.11.2024 14:41 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Light blows and you feed the material forward with your left hand as you go (assuming youโre right handed, otherwise flip!)
21.11.2024 14:33 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I wouldnโt even touch the bick (horn) for that. Iโd just curve it over the back edge of the anvil then flip it over and roll it back in towards me on the face. (Does that make sense?!)

Completed this little handrail today. Some nice details; tricky to get the whole thing in a shot with it in the forge so youโll have to wait until Iโve installed it to see proper pictures!

Nice one! I made a similar pair of dividers a couple of years back; Iโll see if I can find a picture.

Red hot metal formed round a curved jig held in a vice.
Traditionally joined handrail brackets forged by Owen Phillips, Artist Blacksmith at Gate Foot Forge
Iโm a big fan of jigs too - this project has these nice little curved right angle brackets and an hour spent making a simple jig allows me to make them all consistently.

Red hot steel, forged into a twist and resting on an anvil.
Two completed forged twists, 300mm long forged into 25mm square bar by Owen Phillips, artist blacksmith at Gate Foot Forge
Some really satisfying chunky twists made today as part of a larger project. Starting stock is 25mm square, hot chiseled down all four faces and two opposing corners slightly rounded off before twisting two full turns. They came out nicely!

Iโm not actually sure what grade it wasโฆ She just gave me the big bits she wanted forging down and a little bit to practice on. Iโll ask!

Thatโs lovely! Really meticulous work. It forges nicely, just taken to a dull red heat. Quite soft - similar to forging bronze. This is a little thing I made just to test how it forged and get my temperatures right before forging down the big stuff under the power hammer.

14.11.2024 20:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Great, thanks! There is a fantastic artist local to me doing titanium jewellery. She brought some to me to forge down into smaller bars for her and it was fun to work with! A lot more expensive than steel though ๐คฃ

Pleased to welcome Nicki-Joe to capture some shots for a project heโs working on. Challenging shooting in conditions with minimal light & lots of movement. Love the grittiness here!
I donโt think heโs on here but pop over to Insta: @nickijoephoto

Thanks! I share most of my things on insta but if there is a nice community here too then I may be persuaded to participate a little more!!
