She, again, attempts a smile and flicks her visor up, exposing her eyes. He’s not so bad.

“I was supposed to get supplies. It was the only place with no troopers we could find. I ran into you instead”

She holds out a gloved hand, looking expectantly at the boy.

“I’m KB.”

She stares at him completely blank faced, tilting her head curiously.

“Of course.” She says it like it’s the most obvious thing the world. “I have some to share. It’s nice to share. Sometimes my moms pack extra for my friends, so I don’t mind giving some to you.” (CONT)

“Here. You’re underweight.” She (tries to) smile. “They’re really good.” If he didn’t have any friends, maybe she could be his friend.

Fern had a habit of not eating lunch at school, so she always made sure to pack a little extra for her. She knows she should save it, but her mothers always told her that sharing was important.

She pulls out a granola bar (honey and chocolate flavoured, her favourite) and hands it to him. (CONT)

“Oh.” She said quietly. “I’m sorry. That sounds really lonely.”

She looked at him, and then down at the fruit he was holding, and then back at him. The “for now” comment from earlier wasn’t lost on her. She, almost on instinct, grabs her backpack and begins to pull out her lunch box. (CONT)

She felt a pang of sadness and… confusion in her heart. She understood the first part— the troopers-in-white scared her, and she couldn’t say her clothes were the nicest either. But the second part… it felt wrong. To her, at least. Families don’t leave each other like that. They *shouldn’t.* (CONT)

Life is… strangely boring.
I don’t have much to besides school work and walking around. Everyone is so busy.

Where were his parents? Kids don’t live under market stalls.

“You’re really dirty.” She says bluntly but not cruelly, like stating a fact. “Do you live here? Where’s your family?” She wasn’t trying to be mean, but her curiosity got the better of her once again. Her momma says that she’s— (cont)

KB tilted her head curiously, studying the boy a little more. He was covered in filth and dirt in a way that would probably make Neel squeamish. She wishes he were here right now— Neel was always better with people. Especially with a weird boy like this. What was he doing here all alone? (Cont)

“It’s not good to steal.” She stares blankly. “Are you hungry?”

She doesn’t want to scare him. He seems young, and while she should probably just walk away, something about her feels bad.

He’s all alone. She knows what that feels like.

She stops right in front of the stall he’s hiding under, looks down, and cocks her head to the side.

He’s… very small.

She can’t see much except the outline of his heat signature, but judging by his overall figure and heartbeat, he looks to be very young. In fact, he seems to be around KB’s age at first glance.

He’s also seemed to have spotted her. Strange.

She shouldn’t follow it. It’s a horrible idea. She should just keep walking, look away, and pretend it never happened.

KB ignored all her rational thinking, and walks slowly towards the heat signature.

It seemed like nothing at first. To the naked eye, it’s a bunch of low-quality materials shoved together to make a stand. But KB’s visor picks up on something more: *a heat signature*, and a piece of fruit suspiciously disappearing into the shadows. (Cont)

If Fern was here, she’d probably just tell her to look the other way. They didn’t have the time to go investigate broken stalls and stupid accidents. In and out, keep your head down, stay quiet.

KB dodged just out of way as an entire cart of fruit she couldn’t care to name came crashing down. The adults around her barely cared, only a few actually took the time to look before going about their day. (Cont)

It was a nice place, in all honesty: Not as nice as home, it could never as nice as home, but it still felt nostalgic. She just hoped the day would be uneventful.

Maybe that was true, but they at least could’ve gone in pairs. She didn’t like being alone.

But it’s fine. She tells herself that it’s fine. She’s efficient, and she’s having an okay day. Her muscles and joints only hurt a little, so she could put up with a trip around the market. (Cont)

KB really, REALLY hated the marketplace.
She had said not to split up, that staying together was safer for everyone, but Fern said that "covering more ground" was essential, that it’s “faster to split up.”
