This morning we were outside ICE’s headquarters to make it crystal clear: Kristi Noem must go and ICE must get out of our communities NOW. Later today I’m voting hell no on DHS funding, this iteration of ICE can’t be allowed to stand.

Thank you to those who showed up to speak up for our neighbors who can’t right now, to the EPD for working to deescalate the situation and to Mayor Knudson for her sage words.
31.01.2026 17:15 — 👍 11 🔁 2 💬 2 📌 0We are continuously working to de-escalate situations where our community members may be at risk. Tonight, that work included having Eugene Police intervene to avoid direct confrontations between federal agents and protestors. Facing potentially dangerous circumstances, our city has to be focused on timely actions that protect public safety. These are not hypothetical or speculative circumstances. I want to express my appreciation to our staff and local officers for their work tonight. We needed their efforts to de-escalate a situation where people's lives could have been at risk. After a peaceful protest that began mid-afternoon, a riot was declared at our federal building at about 6:00pm. This occurred after a group of protestors broke windows and attempted to enter the building. After this, EPD officers formed a barrier between protestors and the entry point, and people were encouraged to disperse. This heightened situation was 3-4 hours in total. EPD has now departed from the federal building, and federal agents are responsible for the site. Eugene Police will continue to patrol nearby. Your safety and our community's collective, strategic response to challenges are my primary concerns. This is a painful time, and we can rise to the occasion without resorting to violence. Mass, peaceful protest is a powerful and durable mechanism for change-we see this from Minneapolis, and across our country's history. Earlier in the day, I saw hundreds of young people, elders, and even small children attending a peaceful protest. Most people were distant from the facade of the federal building, gathered to exercise their rights in a neighborhood where many small businesses had dedicated the day to solidarity. Our collective power resides with our ability to remain connected to a larger purpose and to each other. In any way you can encourage peaceful and strategic action, please do. MAYOR KAARIN KNUDSON CITY OF EUGENE
When I was in Minnesota, community leaders said over and over again that peaceful protest was key. They had been providing constitutional observer training for nearly a year before thousands of ICE agents were sent to Minneapolis. Breaking into the federal building isn’t peaceful protesting.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

I am horrified that ICE has murdered another person in Minneapolis. Let me be clear: Kristi Noem's DHS must stop violating our constitutional rights. ICE must stand down and allow the proper investigating agencies, including local law enforcement, to do their work without prejudice or predetermination of the outcome. ICE and CPB agents are not above the rule of law. This administration is gaslighting the country and ruining public trust by telling people what they see isn't true. I urge the Senate to do the right thing and block DHS funding NOW.
