#GenerativeAI is useful for problems that are bothersome to produce (or why hand it off?) and are easy to verify (since it's not very reliable). Domain experts can easily verify more complex things, enabling them to make better use of it in those domains.

It was originally intended to compare across categories, to indicate that there are good and bad exemplars in every common sub-grouping, and indicating that bad exemplars tend to dominate. Still, as preferences narrow, "crud" becomes more inclusive.

The recursive corollary to the famous #Sturgeon'sLaw, "90% of everything is crud": "Everything* is crud. * except possibly 1 item". This follows as #Sturgeon'sLaw can be applied recursively to smaller and smaller subsets until everything is crud or only one item remains.

Strong emotions. Love - save those they feel are misguided and recoverable. Hate/jealousy/anger - disrupt the rejoicing of those they despise/want to be. Bewilderment - poke at people to try to understand their confusing behavior.

It's a valuable opportunity for instruction to learn to become more like #JesusChrist from many who have dedicated their lives to Him. It is a #privilege to have to opportunity to attend.

Loved the #GeneralConference message from #ElderHolland. Like the man born blind, #ElderHolland is of age; would you not give his testimony at least some consideration? The Book of Mormon in his life is like the spit and clay that healed the man born blind. He closed with #AmazingGrace.

Noteworthy lesson shared by J Anette Dennis in #GeneralConference: If something goes wrong in someone's life, they don't need your judgment. They need your support.

To be open: I do not expect to ever get a #securityclearance. I believe #EdwardSnowden did the right thing by informing the public that their public servants were lying to them. Saving an innocent life from aggression might morally justify a temporary lie. Pride and control never does.

Nothing terribly exciting happening around here recently. Applying to some faculty positions, designing my next study, and poking into some bugs for #SkyLords. Though #GeneralConference is in three days, which is pretty exciting. Expect a post or two about things I thought were interesting :).

On Thursday submitted another paper to #CHI2026, based on the poster accepted at #SOUPS2025.

A friend just lost some data and is investigating data recovery services. That makes today #backups awareness day. Make sure you have a backup plan for your personal files. Make sure it's automatic. Make sure you check that it's running occasionally. Backups are important. Don't lose data.

A consistent model of reality is important to have useful predictive power, so resolve #cognitivedissonance. All models are wrong, some are useful (George Box). It's okay to have an incomplete or incorrect model as long as you're willing to recognize and update it when new evidence arrives.

Please be sane and sober. Contrails are real, #chemtrails are not. People may lie; don't pick beliefs first and then assume those who disagree are lying #confirmationbias. Probable truth comes from reason (such as math) and from experienced patterns. Ask, "does this fit" and repeat; fix mismatches.

Mostly over being sick. Still weary and lung capacity reduced. Sinuses empty though, fever broke, etc. Food still tastes weird. Let's not do that again. Possibly some variant of influenza.

Starting to get out of being the third sickest in my life. Worst was chicken pox when I was around 2 or 3. Second worst was during a family trip to Disneyland in December 2019 - was out for 3-4 days. Fourth was a two-day migraine while at boarding school. Bad timing, missed a lot of #USENIX2025 :(.

This post reinforces the belief that men _should_ suffer in silence. Should men? Should we all? A beloved quote from EVE Online (in response to a panicking novice player on comms) "then die quietly". Certainly whining is usually useless noise (spam). Are there cases where silence is wrong?

One possible approach: use algorithmic AI to guide the use of generative AI. Don't know enough to say if that could reach a 2 with less hand-holding in a given field. Possible example - run the double diamond pattern to iteratively plot story, arcs, and scenes, then feed those in to write a story.

My brother - "It's the dumbest person in every profession". So, if you're not in the profession it can give useful advice. The value is that it has some cursory knowledge in many professions.

It doesn't have enough context for a specific problem to do a better job, which is where guidance and editing can improve focus and output. While systems could feasibly be trained on problem solving and customer satisfaction skills, the breadth, depth, and amount of data required appears crippling.

#GenerativeAI is pretty nifty. It can get you from a 0 (interested) to a 1 (entry level). Careful use by a 3 (skilled professional) to 5 (famous in your field) can maybe reach 2. It might save some cost/time, but won't give a competitive advantage. Use it when quality doesn't matter, or a fun toy.
