Several days ago, I was amused to see a construction excavator decorated with garlands and fauna. Perhaps done by a Hindu worker celebrating Dusshra.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Oak Treehopper watching over her eggs. These insects don't harm the oak tree, they just leave some twig scars. If you happen to find babies, the mom will typically be there protecting them.

A snazzy sharpshooter hides in the curl of a leaf. Sharpshooters get their name because they drink lots of plant sap and projectile pee to get their waste away from them. #InverteFest

My questions:
- What inspired you to write the Vector City series?
- Also, how did you decide on what superpower to give Joan?

Love the series! 😍

Meet Ophiopsammus maculata, the snake brittle star. Thought to be a scavenger and an ambush predator, it can capture and feed on fast prey including squat lobsters. It either doesn't predate humans, or is such a successful predator nobody has ever survived to tell the tale. We can never know.

How men feared women! she thought, walking among the late-flowering roses. Not as individuals, but women when they talked together, worked together, spoke up for one another - then men saw plots, cabals, constraints, traps being laid.
