Killing off characters for no reason isn't going to do that. A character death should MEAN something! Especially if they're a major character! Killing them off because you don't like them or don't think they serve a purpose is not how you do it!

Every time I see ffXIV fans comment on the game's story... I become infinitely happier that ffXIV fans don't get to write the story.
