The Royal Ontario Museum added thousands of objects to their only museum catalogue last yearβ€”which now totals almost 90,000 objects. My favorite remains this late antique child’s sock from Roman Egypt. 🧦 collections.rom.on.ca/objects/3736... The ancient world was full of kids and color.

The Episcopal Church has put together a very impressive toolkit for protesting, including tips for clergy in particular. Truly inspiring. This is how Christians ought to be engaging the moment.

It's infuriating how stupid these people are. The agency is a federal armed paramilitary occupying a whole city! Police not wearing masks and having body cameras hasn't stopped them from being abusive to the point of killing, why would that be your benchmark? More people will die with these reforms.

Know the Redescribing Christian Origins program unit in SBL? We have partnered with them for years to co-sponsor a panel at the annual meeting. Look out for a CFP for this year's shared panel soon, which will focus on studying and teaching religion under authoritarian regimes.

There shouldn’t be a Department of Homeland Security. It’s a grab bag of various agencies under a dangerously murky heading which can and now has been co-opted for a fascist transition.
Abolish ICE and redistribute the other agencies.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

So when authorities say β€œshe tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

@soniasulaiman.bsky.social - what are you interested in, in particular? Any specific religious traditions? My own work is mostly in Christianity, Judaism, and antiquity, but I'd be happy to offer what help I can!

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

Jesus 'ben Pantera': An Epigraphic and Military-Historical Note There is ample evidence that anti-Christian polemicists asserted that Jesus' true father was neither God nor Joseph, but a Roman soldier named Pantera. This was long dismissed as ahistorical, but ...

It's getting closer to Christmas, so I guess it's time to repost my article on the Panthera legend. I have a book under contract that expands on the topic due out next year. In short: there is no way this particular soldier was the biological father of Jesus: www.academia.edu/42958793/Jes...

Okay the only thing I’ll say about the Compact article is field specific: the trope of β€œtraditional” military history vs. β€œwoke” critical theory needs to die.

How could we even write about the Roman military w/o addressing colonization, empire, masculinity, trauma, ethnicity?
