Our Dept’s grad director has just set up a new MA internship for a student already training in digital tools with the creative team leading these two important public resources in our field—and yes, this is how we reinvent the humanities.

The nice thing about being off teaching for the spring is that I'll have some space to reimagine my fall courses and part of that is going to be handwritten essays in class on shit they'll need to have read thoroughly enough to remember it.

Colleges teach the most valuable career skills when they don’t stick narrowly to preprofessional education Parents and policymakers want job security for graduates, but in the AI and automation era, careers may depend as much on curiosity and initiative as on credentials.

Judging colleges by how they teach vocational skills misses the point, argues an engineering professor.

The skills employers need most include initiative, critical thinking, navigating ambiguity, and more – and those come from blending humanities and STEM. buff.ly/FWQuzll

Why would I use AI for anything when my stuff is way better and I’m paid a good salary to do my stuff?

My mom told her physical therapist she wears a mask because her husband and daughter are immunocompromised. The PT said she is too but isn't worried bc she knows if she dies she is going to heaven. Then her co-worker yelled, “Shut up Debbie you wear a seatbelt and take blood pressure meds” 👀

one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

This dude on the train just said, out loud to the dude he was sitting with that everything about the US is better than here in Canada and proceeded to say "they don't pay any income tax down there" haha so, yeah, we have idiots up here as well. At least 3 people around us gave that guy the stink eye

Cornell College to cut courses, citing student enrollment and data The college announced the change on Friday, citing student enrollment data and interest in the programs to make its decision.

It seems college administrators think their next job will be based on whether their cv says they made these cuts at their last job.

Two screenshots of Diana Taverner from Slow Horses.
In the top one she's saying "I don't think shouting out random words"

In the bottom one she continues "you found at the bottom of emails is going to help."

my Dean (who used to chair the English department) sends an email to William & Mary faculty every F & divides it into a top part everyone should read & a “below the line” creative musing that is optional. I look forward to it each week.

I wish more administrators were creatives.

I feel the same way about my field. The only answer I have found so far is to just create something (with other brilliant collaborators who are willing) so that what we do will continue to exist. But it is a very very heavy lift, and I'm starting to lose energy and hope, even in these efforts.

It just astounds me how ill-prepared (or unwilling?) we are to grapple with the practical conditions of our own profession.

Yes. Absolutely. And by centering the conversation on what's happening in HE, it would be even better to include effective ways to support student care and well-being.
