Who gets the spotlight? Disparities in seabird research attention at scientific conferences
Seabirds are among the most threatened bird groups globally, yet research effort is unevenly distributed among species, with some taxa receiving extenโฆ
Have you ever wondered about the disparities in #seabirds species at conferences? Are we talking about all the species?
Wonder no more. We (@thelabandfield.bsky.social @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social @ingridpollet.bsky.social) have the answer!

Because of the massive increase in #IngestedPlastic this year (number, mass and size of particles) were finding intact items inside our baby #seabirds. This means weโre able to get information on brandsโฆincluding THIS! โฌ๏ธ #SoyFish #PollutionIsADesignChoice #shearwaters

Four hundred three pieces of plastic removed from sable shearwater A. carneipes 90-day-old chick.
On the left are five plastic items (0.073 g) removed during lavage, and on the right are the 398 items (41.812 g) that remained inside the stomach after lavage. The 398 items could not be removed during lavage as the large volume of plastic created a blockage. Instead, these items were recorded during necropsy after the bird was deceased. Pumice (128 pieces, 6.819 g) and squid beaks (not counted) also ingested by the bird are displayed in the petri dishes
Most worryingly, we found evidence of neurodegeneration in <90-day-old seabird chicks with high levels of ingested plastic - protein expression signatures akin to what we see in human patients with dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (3/5)

At the 2024 Movecolab.it meeting @ecotos.bsky.social presented his PhD project on #plastic ingestion in Mediterranean shearwaters.
Plastic has been found in 16 out of the 18 Scopoli's shearwaters (dead for bycatch) checked last week.
